In stark contrast to its three sister courses, Laguna is without pines and, as the name suggests, incorporates water hazards in its fairly flat layout. It used to have three nine-hole loops. The former East and South loops now form the 18-hole Laguna course. The former North loop was renovated and combined with a new nine to form the Millennium Course.
The first hole here is an impressive par 5. You need a good drive and second shot, but the crunch comes with the approach. You have to carry an impressive array of bunkers to find the stepped green. And that's the least of your worries, because the green slopes to its front, creating huge borrows, with the step to complicate the line.
The par 4 fifth strikes terror for even the staunchest player. Yes, the tee is nicely elevated, but the overhanging trees on your left narrow the line of the drive which has a lake to carry: it's about 160 metres. If you're lucky enough to strike the ball well, then there are waiting bunkers beyond the landing area. The approach must carry fingers of the lake to find a generous but sloping green. Somehow it's always difficult to have faith in the distance markers at this hole.
golfer. A right-handed dog-leg determines the length and direction of the shot. The target is a very tight landing area between fairway bunkers and the lake on the right. The approach to a well-protected green is then over the corner of the water. It's always a tough hole.
The par 5 fifteenth is a 'hop, skip and jump' hole, and needs a good drive, good second shot and accurate approach to the forward sloping green. With water intersecting the fairway, and to the right, the chances of a 'Barnes Wallis' are more than likely.

Vilamoura's fourth course is an exciting addition to one of Europe's finest golfing destinations. It demonstrates the technical and aesthetic excellence which the on-going 'Vilamoura XXI' improvement and expansion programme seeks to achieve.
Martin Hawtree's completely new front nine holes are a perfect complement to the extensively reshaped original 'North' loop of the previous Laguna layout. Four of the Millennium's first nine holes are over rolling parkland; the remainder are set between umbrella pines, such a distinctive feature of this part of the Algarve.
The par-4 first rises from the tee in a dogleg to the right. Long hitters may be tempted to try to carry the encroaching trees which form a barrier on the right-hand side of the fairway. At 300 metres it is not overly long, but there are awkwardly placed bunkers to catch a good drive or a wayward approach shot.
The par 3's - the third and sixth - are a delight, both visually and to play. The sixth offers more of a test. There is a lake on the left and makes club selection paramount. When a course is as visually appealing as this one, it is hard to determine which hole will linger longest in the mind, but the twisting and turning par 4 seventh is a contender. Shadows of trees, and mounds and hollows dissecting the fairway conspire to confuse, but a well struck and very accurate drive will set up a comfortable approach to the green.
he second nine opens with a benign par 4 of 335 metres. An elevated tee affords views inland to the hills. The rolling fairways makes you want to open the shoulders and look for a relaxed, comfortable shot to the generous green.
The eleventh - a par 5 - has fairway bunkers and requires accuracy to score well. The par-4 sixteenth invites a drive to the right side of the fairway where there is a strategically placed bunker.
