Lagos is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches of Algarve.

Dona Ana is one of them, at walking distance from town, but for a frequent use, you'd better find accommodation in nearby hotels, or to use a car (parking is paid and difficult).

This small beach lies to the south of Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira, just a stone's throw from the city walls. It's name means, oddly, potato beach so try and not to get fried here! It's a small beach tucked between two small cliffs, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known by the small music festivals that take place there during Summer.

It was a bit on the chilly side to claim it as beach weather but when one is in proximity I must be on it for a few. Walked down towards the water, shoes kicked off, sand squished in the toes and we threaded the needle through the rocks and coves. We did find two girls puffing on joints within a cove, and if I would of overcome my little wall I built, I would of dabbled.

    the beaches and the grutas

There are many beaches in Lagos, but some are more spectacular than others.
The first time in Lagos we only went to Lagoa beach, which is pretty cold and just a long expance of sand.
The second time we went to Donha Ana, and many of the smaller beaches around there.
This is also where the grutas are.
I´ve read in some travel books that Donha Ana and Batata are very polluted.. hmm, they were still very popular, and there were no markings of this. I didn´t get sick afterwards, or develop a rash.

At António Restaurant, Porto de Mós beach, you may lunch, take a coffee or some drink between swimimg or sun bath. It's advisable take care of your skin. Protect yourself with a high factor cream and stay in the shadow often. But in the ocean, you may be at easy. You may swim very far away (a love to do it), because the sea, here, is very reliable.
