Conquered by the Arabs in the 8th century, we can still see some fortifications that they left behind when Portuguese Kings reconquer the region... The fortifications were extended in the 16th-century.
This picture was taken just before it start to rain, this section and archway is located near the monument to the navigator Gil Eanes.

Lagos has a small castle sitting by the river, but even if it´s small it´s quite interesting.
It´s very nicely restored and turned in to a small museum that you can visit for a couple of euros.
There are also some very nice seaviews from the top of the castle.
It´s located very close to the center of town and easy to walk to.

    Silves Castle

    Walls, steps, crenelations, castle

Took about 35 minutes to drive from Lagos to Silves. Approaching from the motorway isn't as dramatic as approaching from one of the back roads, you lose the "castle rising from forest" effect.

Anyway, as castles go, this one's all right. It's got crenelated walls. Views aren't bad from the top. Best feature is probably the colour of the rock from which the whole thing was hewn.

Located overlooking the square where you'll find the statue of Henry the Navigator and the slave market, this fortress was built by the Arabs. The Algarve's military government was established here in the 14th century following the Christian Reconquest of the town in the 13th century.

Built in the 13Th century, the castle was seriously dammaged by Lisbon's eartquake.

A recent reconstruction effort, rebuilt several hundred meters of walls, respecting their original doors and towers.
