You know that, once, we had a king who took our army to a battle in Morocco, where he was defeated and killed, loosing our independence to the Spanish in 1580 (if you didn't know now you do!). In revenge someone decided to build a statue in Lagos. Very appreciated by some specialists, I call it the hockey keeper, and think that it is king Sebastião's second disaster.
My picture is the third disaster.
It's not a revenge, only age and technical mistakes
Fun Alternatives: If you have time, between two beers in nearby bars, try to ask someone the whole story of the statue, or translate the text in http://tapornumporco.blogspot.com/2005/11/lagos-o-d-sebastio-de-joo-cutileiro.html from where i retired a decent picture to give you a clear idea of the monster. It's funny.

If you get asked about going on Bus trips
beware you may well be picking up other tourists from other resorts,so expect to be travelling a while before getting to your destination, then expect to be rushed about before getting back on the coach.we took a trip to the Monchique mountains and were disappointed.
Unique Suggestions: If you are going to go to visit other places , hire a car , my experience was that the roads in the Algarve were very good compared to the U.K. and the amount of traffic on the motorways was minimal.
We went back to the Monchique mountains in our hire car and had a great time ,even stopping off and filling our water bottles from the springs on the way.
Its just getting used to driving on the right and if you take it slowly you will get used to it .
Monchique

When we were there in the summer of 2005, loads of young people headed to the beach after the bars closed. We didn't initially have any problems when we went down there for the first couple of nights, but because its so dark, you can barely make anyone out. One night, my friend who I was there with went to the beach with a guy we'd made friends with out there, and someone managed to steal her bag which was literally right next to her. She has no idea how it happened. So if you do plan to head down to the beach, be really careful. Also, be warned that people go down there to have sex (not a pretty sight) and also that police can go down there, and when you can see the faint outline of a man with a shotgun heading towards you at four in the morning, its pretty damn scary! So just be wary of all these things!!

I also heard youth hostels seem to be a very good place to loose your stuff or to get them robbed.
for the last couple of years, the algarve turned to be a hotspot for robbers, altough i've never seen a thing, and i lived here 4 years...
i can say that i didnt see any stealings, but i've seen some people on the street that i know could do it so... again be careful
Unique Suggestions: attanetion to your stuff. you'll not feel unconfortable in portugal, not at all, theres no need. 10 times worse in spain and 20 times worse in italy so...

It seems many tourists say there are many pickpockets in town. I didnt see any, and Ive lives here before and never actually heard of it...good for me then...
Unique Suggestions: just be careful and call the police or just talk to the robber, this way you'll surprise him... I dont know...never heard of this before, marakesh, oh yeah i felt it...
Fun Alternatives: just talk to the robber, this way you'll surprise him, or just call the police or kick him in the nuts i dont know.

Its a tourist trap, but I think its worth going to see the Grutas.. or grottos.
From right next to them, the boat rides were 10 euros a head.. I don´t know how much they ask from farther away.
