If you are lucky you will see Jorge on his Donkey(Passarinho), They are normaly just up above the spa town of Caldas Monchique at the view point on the main road, They stay on site posing for photos and taking to tourists from about 1300 to 1500. Jorge wears a Leather gaucho style hat and a poncho while his Donkey is decorated with bright blankets and a decorative harness.
Jorge will happily accept any spare change on offer while Passarinho is content with a sweet or a piece of fruit and can bb coaxed into doing a little dance in exchange for his treat.

the highest point in the algarve is just up the hill from monchique. Its a crazy drive up the hill (and down) but the views are outstanding. you can see all the way to the coast.
the best reason for this drive are the restaurants dotted up the hill. pull in at one and enjoy piri-piri chicken. Its an awesome flavour sensation with a view to match

the town of monchique. the houses of Monchique display many of the traditional features of the architecture in the Algarve - white walls, carved stonework, stripes of color around doors and windows.
The narrow streets that wind up the steep hillside, revealing fresh and green views at every turn, lend the town a certain exoticism to which flowers and fruit trees add a fragant suggestion of gradens and orchards. an opportunity to discover an aspect of the Algarve unlike any other.
Monchique is best visited on foot. A walk trough the steep streets of the town centre is rewarded with the views of magnificent hills, glimpsed between houses, and moments of calm in unsuspected corners. at the end, the memory of a hill town with a history and character all its own and a strong desire to return will remain.

It can be found up the side of the hill behind the town - it is uphill all the way so beware! It is ruined and on private property but if you are lucky the farmer will let you in to look around. He uses it as a home for his geese and chickens which adds to the charm!
On the way out he will try and sell you some of his seasonal fruits and vegetables which is a small price to pay so be generous!

As this is a mountainside village there are many many steps to be walked here. You will not be short on exercise here but then again that is the reason for the town. Take a walk and then take one of the Roman sulfur baths to cleanse the body. It feels great!

Getting to Monchique is not hard, buses come from Silves and Portimao. Where there are trains (please note the train station is miles from silves, but the Portimao one is very central and not too far from the bus terminal. With cheap car rental off season it's pretty easy to drive around yourself, this is obviously the most flexible option and you will see more. Hitch-hiking is easy enough. Roads connect from Santa Clara, Aljezur, Silves, Portimao and San Marcos de Serra (tho this road is proan to the odd tree falling on it)

You will see many old ladies chatting around the town as many of the young yearn for the big city and leave the sleepy little town as soon as they are old enough to go. One of the things I had noticed around Portugal is that many of the doors on the older buildings are huge which is funny as many of the Portuguese people are short.
Always great the people with a smile and they will always return a smile back to you.

Favorite thing: In Monchique you will find everything you need for a spa vacation. There is good shopping for local crafts, good food and the Algarve is only a short drive away so you can get some beach time as well. In the summer many of the Portuguese from the coast come to Monchique to escape the heat of the day so you will find many “day trip” folks running around the town. Take a walk around and explore the Roman ruins and see how much the Roman bathhouses have NOT changed over the past few hundred years.
