Me and buddies at the Deserta

The ilha deserta(deserted island) is also called Ponta da Culatra (Culatra's edge) because it's located on the east edge of the Ilha da Culatra(Culatra's island). It used to be a bit more deserted than what it is now,but it's still a lot more peaceful than most beaches in the area. The last time I was there was in July of 2004 and there we're only five people there. And this is an area with a lenght of 6 to 8 kilometers if you include the ocean side, wich is even more deserted. You can only go there by private boat or by aqua-taxi.You can get an aqua-taxi on Olhao's pier. There's a sign with their phone number just by the pier.It might cost between 20-30EUR one-way and take up to 6 people,so it's not so expensive if a few people share the ride.Tell the guy in the boat that you want to go to Ilha Deserta on the east side, facing the Armona Island. This will prevent him to take you to another Ilha Deserta located near Faro(also a cool place). It might sound confusing, but it's not if you look at the map and if you learn a few words in portuguese.Don't forget to set an hour for your return with the guy of the aqua-taxi,or you'll be stranded on a deserted island.Take some water and food because there's nothing there apart from the sea and sand. And most important, bring back all the litter you make, please!

    Marim pier

Quinta de Marim is a natural reserve located on the outskirts of Olhao, just next to the camping park. It's a very nice place to walk,do some jogging or just chill by the sea.If you like photographing wildlife, this is the place for you.Flamingos, wild ducks, lots of different species of aquatic birds, chameleons and other reptiles, etc,it's all there. They even have a few hideouts if you want to do some birdwatching without scaring the animals away.
