Praia do Vau is a an off the beaten track beachcove, you'll drive about 20 minutes west of Portimao, park the car and then trek 10 minutes through a nature reserve. Once there, you'll notice that all the sunbathers are male though... This is basically a gay beach. So nude sunbathing allowed. Some cruising goes on so not a place to bring children.
A good place to swim and explore though. Parts get shaded by the early afternoon, so although this isn't somewhere that you'll find beach-umbrellas and ice-creams for sale, you needn't burn your bits either. In fact no shops here, so make sure you bring enough water and munchies to last you.
You'll probably need your own transport to get here. You also have to navigate your way down the cliffs to the beach so if you have mobility problems you'd best avoid this place.
This Beach Praia do vau, is an excellent beach, as it offers privacy and a very pleasnt scenary, between the orage sea coves and cliffs. The beach praia do vau has various areas, the gay beach is not part of the main beach, where all families go. To reach this area of the beach, one has to cut off from the main road into a dirt road that leads to the middle of the trees on the cliffs. Having parked` the car, one has to walk along the path until the cliffs, and look down. The small beach is then easily spotted, as sunbathers are mainly men. then a treck down is necessary, (a dirt path leads the way).
between praia da rocha and alvor, you will find the cut off mentioned on the main road. (one of them is right next to a resort, near the area prainha) - 15 min by car.
A pleasant area to rest and enjoy the sun, the algarve has to offer.
Altough this is not exactely a hidden beach, at sunset time, even in the peak of Summer it becomes an excelent quiet place to end a day. And actualy is the starting point for those who like to walk to go and explore, because nearby there are some great hidden beaches waiting for those who want to avoid the summer crowded places.
