Praia da Rocha Things to Do

  • The Marina

The Marina is a great place to get Dolphin watching Safaris, tours or just to walk around and admire the boats. There are some nice Bars, Cafe's and Restaurants.

  • The St Catarina Fort

St Caterina Fort is at the end of the Beach near the Marina. It offers a birds eye view over the surrounding area. It was built in 1621 on the orders of D. Joao de Castro (Governer of the Algarvian Kingdom) to protect the City of Silves and Vila Nova de Portimao from Spanish Pirates and Moors. The Fort has a nice little Bar/cafe now and it's a nice...

  • Beach's and Cliffs

Praia da Rocha has a lovely and famous Beach's that are among the safest on the Algarve, but the scenic clifftop walk from above the Buraco da Avo (Grandmothers hole) tunnel to a couple of Kilometres beyond to Praia do Vau and requires care in places as the cliff edges are crumbly and have some sheer drops. It is best to stick to the new cobbled...

Praia da Rocha Restaurants

  • Great for watching sports

Bacchus Bar is a great place to watch sports and have a good inexpensive meal. The menu is eclectic, consisting mainly of pub type food but you can get anything from fish and chips to chicken piri piri. Artur and his son, Artur, are great hosts and make you feel very welcome. The outdoor area is the best - surrounded by greenery, complete with a...

  • Craftmanship in the kitchen

At the beach in Praia da Rocha you have several small restaurants where you can have good meals and the staff is friendly. There is one restaurant that stands out: Senhora da Rocha. Jay runs this restaurant near the turqois parasols with excellence. I don't know how he does it, but it is just that little better than the others. The best dish is...

  • Great food

The food is first rate be it locally sourced fish or local dishes. The owner and his wife run it and go out of their way to welcome you. They are open for Breakfast's lunches or Dinners. And I can recommend anything on the menu. Such is the choice. So give it a chance the next time you are in Praia Do Vau it is a 15 minute walk from Praia Da Rocha,...

  • You name it

visit the marina for a wide selection of restaurants, true you will pay extra but hey your on holiday.Parking is about a euro if you stay over an hour and you have access to a small beach lots

This is the portugeese version of Burger king. There is one on the main strip. Its so cheap.Eat upstairs as the views of the resort are great and the room isnt used much! Love the 1 euro 95 cent meal known as the classic , for that you get a burger ,coke and fries. You can have beer instead of coke for the same price! All that for £1.30! you can...

  • Out of this world

This place was recommended by our friends who visied Portugal last year and we included it in our plans.Located on Portimao Marina dock.Easy to find. We had Arroz de Marisco (several types of shellfish spiced and gently boiled with rice) some salad, soup and sangria.Main course was so delicious and plentiful that we invited our waiter to join...

Praia da Rocha Nightlife

  • Best view in Rocha

The best view and ambiance in Rocha. Truly something out of the ordinary for this resort area packed with dingy Irish bars and 6.70 euro tourist menus. Off the beaten path, this white stucco building with bright blue trim was such a find. Located on the cliffs, this place has the most breathtaking views and the owners are just lovely. I can't speak...

  • Cheap boozing with great views

Pria has lots of irish bars due to the ryanair connection. if your running short of monet try the free seats at the back and to the left of burger ranch great view and take your own stuff! Its a circular bench with a great backdrop.

Praia da Rocha Transportation

  • Local taxis very good value

This is not about transport in Praia da Rocha but it is about eating out believe me you should try The Jackaranda Resturant in Praia do Vau. It has the best quality food at very reasonable prices. It is own and run by Robin and Hunny. So give it a try you will not be sorry.Ned

  • Get a car

The roads have improved no end since the late eighties, faro to the resort is 30 mins in a taxi for 50 euros, hire a car its cheaper! you can get a bus for 12 euros each way details to follow!we drove from seville this year as the price was so cheap its about 160 miles but the roads are toll free and empty did it in just over two hours and didnt...

  • Public Buses

We were quite impressed with the local bus service. We took a trip to Lagos, which cost us 2.50 euros each. (taxi was 20.40euros each way!) The buses were clean and air - conditioned. They were far better than the buses which were used for the airport to accomodation.

Praia da Rocha Warnings and Dangers

  • AWH's Profile Photo

by AWH Written Aug 2, 2003

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Everywhere we went we were faced with these dreadfully made mosaic pavements or sidewalks. They were treacherous, especially as one normally wears sandals or flip-flops on holiday. On the steep inclines the stones were shiney, which made it very difficult to walk safely.

Praia da Rocha Tourist Traps

  • Beware the Gypsies in black selling...

Me and my husband been to praia da rocha for christmas and new year. My husband is a smoker and all the smokers know how expensive cigarretes can be! But one evening taking a walk in praia da rocha, a misterious man in black came up... he had a long black beard, black clothes and a was wearing a black beret on his head. he offered us any cigarretes...

Watch our for the nice girlie offering you an opportunity to have a free scratch card. I won the top prize, they wanted to whisk us all off to Alvor to look at a complex. I wouldnt visit the Algarve again certainly wouldnt buy a time share! Ignore them!

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

Praia da Rocha Off The Beaten Path

  • The lighthouse at the end of the world

Cap st vincent is worth the drive, dramatic cliffs and the castle of sagres nearby.this place was thought to be the end of the world for some time, go visit and see why.

  • Good shopping centre

Head out of the resort towards slide and splash and go over the roundabout, head up the hill and you will see a large makro sign, opposite is a swanky shopping centre with a large food hall. Good for bargains.

Praia da Rocha Favorites

  • Walking at the beach

It's great to walk at the beach. You will find several of these "rock gates" and if you walk through, you'll find another sandy beach. But take care of the tides, some places may be impassable during flood. If you're lucky there's a way up, otherwise you have to stay and wait for ebb... I think climbing up the rock is no real option!

  • Nature of the south

Many people come to Praia da Rocha for the clubs and bars but the real beauty is the coast and the hidden coves with clean sandy beaches. Explore the coast and see how beautiful it can be, then do the clubs at night.
