Querenca is a quaint village where not much has changed. If you want a break from the touristy beach, take a trip to the village of Querenca, visit the church, have some of the local liquor and meet some friendly people. Nearby is also the natural reserve area of benemola where you can do some hiking, or more relaxing. (Yes, there is actually a forested area in the Algarve!!!)

near Qeurenca there is a walkingpath along a small river and a weel: fonte de Benémola. A beautiful walk, we have seen a lot of little animals. A pity we didn't see the kingfisher.
On our way we passed a basket maker.
It was a 2 hour walk.

This is a natural reserve area just outside Querenca. If you google earth, there are some pics by a Viegas dos Santos, mayor of Querenca. It's west and slightly north of Querenca. It is 390 hectares (almost 1,000 acres) and is in no way a monlithic forest. There are also caves, which I did not have a chance to explore.
Here is a page of pics from Sr. dos Santos
