Beaches around Sagres

Baleeira is a small picturesque fishing port of Sagres, which houses up to one hundred fishing boats, some over 20 metres in length.

There are four good beaches in the neighborhood. Praia do Martinhal is the farthest from the village, but it is the biggest and the most protected if a westerly wind is blowing. It stretches from the Baleeira fishing harbor to an outcrop of low cliffs, the site of a Roman settlement that specialized in the production of amphorae.

Praia da Mareta just below the village and facing southeast is tucked in the lee of Sagres Point.

Over on the other side and facing west is Tonel, a small beach with steep access.

There is a long beach at Beliche, perhaps the best around Sagres.

The beaches up the west coast are fantastic, many of them comprising of acres of nearly deserted sand backed by dunes or cliffs looking out over lines of surf cascading in on the wildly beautiful shore.

Situated overlooking Sagres Bay and its fishing harbor, Baleeira beach is a small rocky beach. From Baleeira beach, by the harbor, you can see fishing boats disgorging their catch every afternoon. Unfortunately, the proximity to the fishing harbor and its boats periodically affects the water quality at Baleeira beach. So at times local conditions do make it unsuitable for swimming.

Best of all is Beliche beach, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Sagres on the way to Cape St Vincent. As it is situated outside of normal walking distance from Sagres, Praia da Beliche beach is seldom overcrowded, except maybe in August. A path leads about 650 feet (200 m) down to the beach and you will find plenty of parking area for your automobile. This is a lovely, almost 2,000 foot (500 m) long but fairly narrow beach. Under most conditions you will find that this beach is ideal for relaxing your body and your mind. It has very good surf but it can become tricky and hazardous it there is a direct westerly wind. The imposing cliffs have been eroded into a honeycomb of caves and coves, offering shelter from the omnipresent wind, and lapped by exceptionally clear water. Don’t miss the family of peregrine falcons that nests up in the cliffs. As long as you are in good condition, you will be very happy that you took the time to visit Beliche beach - if you survive the climb back up the 200-odd steps that lead down to it!

The red sandstone cliffs of the south coast stage a gloriously vivid ochre finale before being superseded by a mixture of hard limestone and jagged black slate up the west coast. Those in the know rate Sagres’ beaches among the best in the world and Europe’s surfers make annual pilgrimages. The nearest beach to Sagres is Praia da Mareta, just below the central square, a long beach with large slabs of rock to bask on.

The Praia da Mareta is an approximately one-third mile (600 m) long, flat bathing beach situated below the town. The Praia da Mareta lies in a bay sheltered from the wind; therefore sunbathing, playing and bathing with children is possible here. However, the composition of the beach - sand or pebbles - always depends on the wind and sea conditions. There are parking spaces situated above the beach, as well as restaurants and boat hire

Just prior to entering Sagres, and 5 miles (8 km) from Vila de Bispo on the EN 125, one will encounter a turnoff to the left clearly marked Praia do Martinhal. It is surrounded by sand dunes but only experienced and capable swimmers should attempt swimming as the unprotected bay and local winds can make conditions quite difficult at times. Often this is an ideal location for surfing that makes it very popular with windsurfers.

To the west is Tonel beach, beloved of surfers with its giant breakers and soft sand. Tonel beach is near the old Fortaleza and its lighthouse. It seems to be an ideal spot for fishing and diving but be careful when it is windy or wet as there are steep rock formations that could cause the unwary much grief. In summer it is supervised by experienced lifeguards as the currents can also pose some danger to inexperienced swimmers. You get to Tonel beach by turning right at the first roundabout in Sagres and following the road to Cape St. Vincent.

    sagres scubado diving
we visited sagres in may which is slightly before the area gets busy so when we turned up at the dive shop we found a blackboard notice that 2 or more people could phone up and arrange a dive anytime which is what we did and had a dive organised for the next day.

We hired the full kit including masks and fins, were taken out by boat to the location and the dive master took us down, showed us where to find the best sights, gave directions and then left us too it. As fairly new divers this was perfect. The dive was 21 meters good visabilty and the dive master gave us confidance to go and dive on our own while enjoying the dive.

the diving dog was entertainment while waiting for the boat to be loaded with gear, the dogs owner wishes to have a scubaset made up for the dog as he insists on following the boat out. but if your in dry clothes give the dog room he has an instict for dry people when shaking of!

the shop has it all or bring your own
