O patio: Make your own mind up
We ate here a couple of nights and it was always busy, for that reason i suggest that when they bring the couverts, stock up as they are great and you might have a bit of a wait for your main course but it will be worth it. The waiters are really friendly and you can sit outside, or there are a couple of tables near the bar (benefitting from the breeze but not as cold as outside) and more tables upstairs- be warned though its quite hot upstairs but it does have a lovely atmosphere. The portions are really generous too.
Having gone back to this restaurant again this year i feel the need to slightly edit this tip so as not to mislead anyone as our experience was different this time around. While the portions are still generous and the food is good it seems o patio might be a victim of its own sucess. It was very busy on numerous occasions as to be expected but the wait for food was too long and the staff were flustered and unable to cope with the volume of people, the quality of food seemed to also suffer as a result.I was served a kebab on half a terractta drainpipe-its acceptable to be adventurous with presentation had it not been really overcooked. 2 different years, two different experiences so i don't know which is the refective of the real o patio!
Brisa do Rio: delicious food, efficient service
This restaurant is my favourite in Tavira, the food is simple, local and delicious. Everytime time we go it is always very busy with repeat clients and its the same two hardworking waiters who are rushing around but still find time to treat you as individuals. Its only a small restaurant with some tables outside and because its quite popular there is usually a wait for food but it is definately worth waiting for. I can honestly say that between me and my husband we have probably tried most dishes and all were superb-the apple, goats cheese and honey starter deserves a special mention though, as does the duck and the peri-peri shrimps, infact the portugese steak is fab and so are the lamb dishes! finish off the meal with a glass of beirao, its a liquer served over ice made in portugal and it has a secret blend of herbs in it that is good for your digestion but also tastes lovely. It isnt in a fancy place by the river and it doesn't serve its food on elaborate plates in a designed way, its just great tasting food in a lovely atmosphere with sincere, efficient staff.
Aquasul: Wouldnt bother
The place had a nice ambience & good table arrangements, staff are friendly enough. The food however was definately nothing to write home about and on the expensive side. Having eaten in many restaurants throughout the Algarve over the past 6years I can honestly say this was one of the worst. 20.50euros for Fillet steak which turned out as Sirloin shoe leather. Definately cheaper and better quality restaurants around.
Alquimia: - Alquimia - excellent, seek it out
Dont be fooled by the outside. Go inside and the food is excellent, service is superb and the surroundings are lovely. Real, authentic, simple, warm, charming.
We had a lovely family meal, with good wine and all to ourselves!
Definately try the Steak on a Stone( excellent quality meat) or the Tagines.
A family meal which will be remembered for a LONG time. :)
Favorite Dish: Steak on a Stone or Tagines
Tapas to start with.
excellent wine at 14.50 Euro

Aquasol: Great Restaurant
quaint seating outside in the evening or inside if you prefer...this bustling restaurant is open only for dinner, fresh seafood, steaks, pasta dishes all unique and very well presented
Favorite Dish: seabream baked in paper...delicious
Alquimia: The best of a good bunch
Alquimia....nice surroundings, excellence service, very nice food, relaxed ambience, Rive Gauche would get a close 2nd, Aquasol...nice food, v.poor service (90 min wait for main course), some other good restaurants and bars particularly Patricks and Santa Lucia
Favorite Dish: Tuna Tagine
Sorry! lost in time: Great place to eat
A number of quayside restaurants in Tavria but this one we travelled back to as we rated the food so much and great price! Cannot remember the name but the only restaurant you can see north of the footbridge, that is up stream. Got very busy on the Sunday although quieter on the second visit during the week. We only really noticed how good the building looked from across the river. Local buskers appear outside to add ambience.
Favorite Dish: Turkey with cheese baked in oven. Baked chicken in breadcrumbs.
Alquimia: Local restaurant with Arab taste in Tavira
Very nice restaurant close to the river of Tavira.
It has a nice terrace and around 10 tables in which good seafood and some revisited portuguese dishes are served. It is ideal if you are a bit fed-up with the classical, "very good but equally heavy" kitchen from the Algarve.
Mixed with the typical portuguese food, there is also a choice of Arab dishes.
Favorite Dish: Lamb Tajine, huge and spicy, beautifully served in a Tunisian clay recipient.

Snooker Bar Avenida: Local atmosphere
It was so nice to be back to normal prices (prices before euro when a coffe was 100 ptas = 0,60 cent of Euro) that we went back a few times.
They did not overcharge us for being tourist, and they were very nice and helpful all the time
O Pátio: Great atmosphere
It was by pure chance that we founded on our first night this little and cosy restaurant. We arrived to the hotel late and tired after working and driving all day. We hoped to have a quiet meal there and a drink before going bed and wake up fresh for the next day. But that day the hotel had the restaurant fully book, so they told us to go the city center. We walked along the old town for a while not finding anything but enjoying our visit at night through Tavira when crossing the roman bridge I spotted the restaurant.
It was excellent. The service, the food make it a very special place to be. The tourist office the next day also recommended us this place for a special treatment
Favorite Dish: For starters they show you a selection of cheeses (take both they are incredible) sardines and tuna paste, olives etc. We just loved the cheese ones so much that we had to came back ;-)
For main courses you have selections of meat and fish, all at good prices, very well presented with a separate dish of salad and fresh fried potatoes. The sauces that went with the meats or fish were very interesting too.
We went again and we will be back ;-)
The food in Tavira...
wen u go all along the old Roman bridge u will see the restaurants plenty of good stuff and the best seafood, may not be the cheap place but it worth.
Favorite Dish: Cataplana de marisco (seafood & fish mixed) it´s just too good and with a cold white win it´s from heven...

On roadside and at the beach you find a lot of grills offering fresh fish. An ideal place for those who do not want to pay a lot in restaurants.
