This was the only church of 13 I visited to be open when I visited Tavira one morning. It's located just in front of the larger Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and dates from the end of the 18th century. It was originally donated by King Alfonso III to the Bishop of Silves in 1270, having belonged to the Military Order of Santiago de Espada.
Located by the castle this old church (XIII century) was damaged by Lisbon´s earthquake and reconstructed afterwards.
With several chapels and altars, it has a good painting collection.
This church is in the old town part of Tavira. It stands close to the much larger Santa Maria Church. However from the side it is very impressive in design and color.
