Driving In Portugal

by Balam

Portugal has the highest accident rate in Europe, so, be careful in traffic. They hardly keep the speed limits and they overtake at the most impossible places. Please remember that just because the Locals get away with it, it doesn't mean you will. Fines for traffic offences are substantial in Portugal. Such infringements as speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, the use of mobile phones whilst driving and illegal parking are heavily penalised. Special emphasis is also placed on the use of child safety seats and seat belts in the rear of the vehicle. The police have the authority to fine on-the-spot and most of their vehicles are equipped with portable ATM machines to facilitate immediate payment. The Portuguese Highway Code can be found (in Portuguese) at: http://www.dgv.ptYou must keep your passport, Driving License and car hire/Insurance agreement with you in case you...

The People

by silver_stars

A previous entry stated that the people are unfriendly which is just an absolute lie! The people are lovely and i have been going to the algarve all my life. They just appreciate it if tourists aren't too loud, common, too english and in your face! They like respect for their country.

Algarve - be prepared to explore it

by davesut

All of the resorts in the Algarve are very busy in the summer, the evenings were packed with people along the promenades and in the ice cream parlours. The promenades were too often backed with high rise blocks which have sucked too much character out of the place. My advice is to bob in and out of these places. If you spend two weeks in one resort I could see many people getting fed up with it all, therefore as an Algarve tourist I recommend a car.

Mosquitos

by rob-craig

Beware of the mosquito when in the Algarve, although more of a nuiscance than a health hazard I dont see why you should let them help themselves to your blood.Exept in winter protect youself at night when the temperature drops they come to feed, keep all windows and doors closed, cover youself in bed and wear a repellant.Did you know that only the female mosquito bites humans or animals(now there is a suprise eh?) because she needs the protein derived from blood to produce her young the male feeds off plant pollen. She can smell a victim from hundreds of feet away through 2 antennae on her head YUK!

Travel Reps

by rob-craig

Beware of these people who tell you that "only they" can get you the best deals on care hire, excursion tickets etc. What they actually do is recieve a commission for every car they hire for every trip they book ,get it? We were quoted by our cosmos rep E161euros for car hire for 5 days no extras,we actually hired a car from another hotel next to ours for E95 euros for 4 days no extras

Driving can be hazardous in...

Driving can be hazardous in the Algarve especially in the countryside where obstacles can vary from large potholes to stray goats One day we actually saw an elderly lady walking a large pig along the road,it was ok though because she had it tethered by one leg with a piece of string!
