  • The Castle

    Mértola Things to Do

Coming from the 9th century, this Muslim castle was conquered by the Portuguese in 1238. The successive enlargements and reinforcements gave it a different look. Abandoned in the 18th century and ruined, it was partially recovered in the 20th century and today is part of the historic ensemble, also exposing some roman, visigothic and muslim carved...

  • Pulo do Lobo

    Mértola Off The Beaten Path

A natural accident, south of Alqueva dam, was almost unknown until the day when the prime-minister (actual President), to evade a question from a journalist, said that he had been out with the family visiting Pulo do Lobo. After some kilometers in a dirty road (either from Mertola or from Serpa) it provides two kinds of show - a vigorous waterfall...

  • Pleasant rest

    Mértola Things to Do

Alentejo is, at our scale, a large province that stands in the way to Algarve. Most people coming from the north cross it without stopping, anxious to relax by the sea. But that is not a wise solution. You may, as we say, "join the useful to the pleasant", and make a "technical stop" al Mertola. The town is small but wonderful. Depending on your...

    Beja Restaurants

What a surprise!Coming from Spain we stopped in Beja for lunch, in search of a "Sopa de Cação" - Dogfish soup (believe me - it is something special, when they know how to do it).The first checked restaurant HAD the soup. Now, the second surprise - it was the best that we tasted. Absolutely delicious and well served.I surely recommend this small...

    Beja Local Customs

Policy in Portugal was largely influenced by the dimension of rural properties - small state in the half north, with thousands of owners led to conservative people; large state in Alentejo led to... communism. Agriculture is no longer the main activity in the area, but it still has a great influence. The annual agricultural fair, Ovibeja, is a...

Vila Nova de Milfontes

  • Wild Coast

Vila Nova de Milfontes Things to Do

Either north or south of Vila Nova de Milfontes, the coast is wild, with dramatic landscapes, and nice secluded beaches. The sea is cold and generally rough, but travelling along the coast is a wonderful contact with nature.

  • Beaches

Vila Nova de Milfontes Things to Do

Vila Nova de Milfontes is mainly a dwelling point to Portuguese. Hardly built with villas and apartments, with a few hotels, it is a family's destination, taking advantage of the calm beaches in the mouth of Mira river. For those preferring stronger emotions the Atlantic coast is rougher, but... colder.

  • Handicraft and cool jewelery

    Vila Nova de Milfontes Shopping

A Canga is a fantastic shop- you can find unique arts and crafts, really cool jewelry and interior decoration items. There is some really fabulous stuff designed by the shop owner and her sister (from crockery to flower arrangements to landscape and portrait painting) Local handicraft - terracota crockery. Really varies on item!

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In this region can be a nice idea to travel with a 4x4, cause there are some roads close to the sea that aren't accessible by car.
But make sure that you have a good 4x4 if you want to venture in some sandy roads!!!

This picture was taken in Praia dos Aivados, between Porto Covo and Vila Nova de Mil Fontes when we decided it would be fun to go to Porto Covo by the inside road!!! That was a lame 4x4!!!!! We were lucky and some guys that live close by saw us and rushed home to get their 4x4 and pull us out!!

  • Castle

    Moura Things to Do

I never visited it. I think that it is being recovered and it is already open to visit, together with an Arab museum. Next time I will dedicate it a brief stop. I'm curious to verify what lasts from a very rich history, with more than one thousand years and many wars.

  • Alqueva Dam

    Moura Things to Do

The new "biggest artificial lake in Europe" is located 15 km distant from Moura, but this is the best place to stay and eat, in its vicinities. The touristy use of the lake is only starting, but it is a pleasant visit in the dry Alentejo.

  • Impressive historic place

    Moura Things to Do

If you have time visit the village of "Santo Aleixo da Restauração". During the wars with Spain, in the 17th century, the people of Stº Aleixo, instead of leaving the combat to the soldiers decided to stood and fight. While women and children took refuge in the church the man accompanied by a few soldiers, engaged in some savage combats with the...

    Ferreira do Alentejo Restaurants

Lunch was the purpose of our stop in Ferreira, with the constraints of a baby in the group. It happened that we were the only customers in a wide and nice restaurante, becoming the center of the owner's attentions. He explained us that we were the last family to be served there, because the restaurant will be reserved for groups in the future....

  • Calvario chapel

Ferreira do Alentejo Things to Do

In the centre of town a small odd construction called our attention. It was closed, and only back home I read about it. It is a religious chapel, announced as unique in its conception and it is now the symbol of the city.

  • The city

Ferreira do Alentejo Things to Do

In a short visit, Ferreira seemed to me a well maintained city, with the characteristics of Alentejo presente everywhere, but in a discreet way, evidencing that it is not a tourist top destination. Maybe a good place to live, more than to visit.

  • Magnificent High Coast

    Cavaleiro Things to Do

Fresh air, a fantastic view along the rocky coast and almost noone around, this is how I experienced the coast at Cabo Sardão (where noone was bird watching). The water can be very wild as the Atlantic is working on the rocks. Have a look at the structure made by the layers of the rock. You can see how the power of the earth has folded them at some...

On a very beautiful spot of the Costa Vicentina you will find the lighthouse Farol do Cabo Sardão, which was built in 1915 and has a height of 17 meters. With the height of the coast the focal plabe is at a total of 68 meters above sealevel, which helps to reach as far as 23 seamiles onto the Atlantic.Following the link below, search for Odemira...

  • Birdwatching ... the hawks

    Cavaleiro Things to Do

If you are lucky you might see hawks nesting in the rocks high above the sea at the Cabo Sardão. It is fantastic to see such a nature. Actually I was lucky to see them as several people came here to do birdwatching. It is a great place for this as here also the only population of white storks exists which nests directly at the sea.
