    Gates of Ródão

by solopes Updated Dec 27, 2013

This narrow passage of Tejo river is so close to the Spanish border that it is generally considered as the entrance of the river in Portugal.

The natural landscape is wild and beautiful in the area.

    Sabugal

I've been in Sabugal just once, being surprised by the pentagonal tower of its castle.

I hadn't read much about it, but found it an interesting stop, in a trip made with friends visiting the historical towns and villages along the northeastern border. A pleasant and relaxing trip, meeting some classical references of our history and culture, and the hospitality of the population.

Once back home I read that it has the expected rich history, since 1224, the year when Afonso XIX from Leon firstly tried to build a fortification, concluded a few years later by the Portuguese king after Alcañices treaty.

It served in many wars until 1811, against Napoleon's troops. Abandoned then, it was used as a cemetery by the population from 1846 to 1927, with several restorations since then.

    Monsanto

by solopes Updated Aug 30, 2012

Largely promoted as "The most Portuguese village of Portugal" Monsanto surely deserves your visit.

It's an opportunity to travel a little in the forgotten Portuguese inland.

Further commernts and photos will "grow" in my Monsanto's page.

    Idanha-a-Velha

by berenices Written Apr 28, 2010

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Idanha-a-Velha is a small, very picturesque village, notable for its well-preserved archeological ruins, dating back to pre-Roman times. It has the impressive Roman walls, with its towers, Roman bridge that connected Merida (Emerita Augusta) and Braga (Bracara Augusta), and the Sé Cathedral, among others. The Cathedral had been built on top of an already existing church, whose ruins can still be seen through an observation glass. Vestiges of habitation during Roman times (including objects) are in abundance, as this was place was considered an important route in ancient times. Also to be seen is the community oven which is still very much in use.

    Idanha-a-Nova

by xicomelo Written Feb 4, 2005

Idanha-a-Nova is a small village. It has a small lagoon, a camping, some restaurants and History. It's very friendly and quite. If you are travelling around, this place could be great for a sleeping night or just for a lunch break. There are some historical monuments that deserve a visit.

If you want even more history, you'd better visit Idanha-a-Velha, too.
