Igreja de Santa Cruz by arasnosliw This is one of the main churches in Coimbra, situated in one of the most popular pedestrian squares (Praça 8 de Maio). This church was once home to Augustine friars after construction in 1131 and is now home to the tombs of ex-Portuguese Kings Dom Afonso Henriques and Dom Sancho I. Other members have written a great deal about the history of the church, so I will not bore you with the same details. Just note that Coimbra is FULL of churches. Every corner holds a different one. If you are an avid church-viewing tourist you will live this city. If churches don't excite you so much (like me), take the opportunity to view a couple (since you can't avoid them) and then explore what else the city has to offer. st michael's cathedral, U de Coimbra by arasnosliw This ornately decorated chapel (Capela de São Miguel) is small, but its lavishness certainly makes up for its diminuitive size. The Manueline (architectural style unique to Portugal) chapel was built in the 16th century and later remodeled. This is the chapel of Universidade de Coimbra (Coimbra U) and is a popular site to hold weddings. I had the opportunity to attend a wedding here. Open: Jan-Apr 9.30am-noon & 2pm-5pm; May-Sep 9am-7.30pm Oct-Dec 9.30am-noon & 2pm-5pm Leave a Comment Address: Largo da Porta FérreaPhone: 239 859 800Directions: bus 1Website: www.uc.pt

Yes, yet another church tip. Didn't I tell you that Coimbra is brimming with them? The church was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, but continued to be worked on throughout the 19th. This was once home to the Jesuits. One interesting architectural note is that the 16th century choir stalls and the paintings above them as well as the Manueline font to the left of the entrance were all brought from the Sé Velha (Old Cathedral) . When I stepped into the New Cathedral, I wandered into yet another Saturday wedding. That would make it 3 in one day. Uff. It would have been rude to wander around while the service was in process, but I was able to take one photo of the interior. Hours: open Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 12:30pm and 2 to 5:30pm Admission free Hours: open Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 12:30pm and 2 to 5:30pm Leave a Comment Address: Largo da FeiraPhone: 239.823.138

Are you interested in Portuguese history? Would you like to learn more of there ex-colonial powers? Go to Portugal dos Pequenitos. Although this park full of miniatures of Portugal's most famous monuments is targeted for families with children, people of anyone age can have fun here - especially those young at heart (like me) Enter the world full of miniature Portuguese monuments. *When you first enter the park there is an entire section dedicated to the ex-portuguese colonies. Portugal once controlled these countries (regions): Mozambique, Angola, Cabo Verde, Sao Tome & Principe, Guinea Bissau, East Timor, Goa (region of India), Macao (now part of China) There are also representations of Portugal's autonomous regions: Madeira Azores Each region has a house full of artifacts, history, and customs of the country. *For a small additional charge, you can visit the museums at Portugal dos Pequenitos. There are four museums: costume, maritime, furniture, and a brazilian pavilion used for temporary expositions. *Since the name of the place literally translates to Portugal of the little ones (kids), it's only appropriate to have a play area here. After passing through the global village, there are miniature scaled Portuguese monuments that only children can fit into. Sure it's a lame alternative to actually seeing these life-sized monuments, it is fun to play in. Sé, the old cathedral of Coimbra by arasnosliw I arrived in Coimbra on a weekend. My visits to churches coincided with Sunday Mass (note that Portugal is predominantly Catholic). When I walked into Sé Velha, I didn't realize that mass was going on and I was goofing off with a broom sweeping the floor. I certainly got a lot of evil stares from those in prayer (although I truly wasn't trying to be a distraction). This Gothic styled church was built fortress-like in the 12th century on top of an old Moorish mosque. The church is most noted as the site where the Coimbra University tradition of singing fado (Coimbra style: read my intro) and burning ribbons occurs when each class graduates every May. onion fest ladies by arasnosliw During the month of August, Coimbra is host to an onion fair. This ancient tradition still manages to stink up the streets of town. Imagine entering a square full of onions at night. Although the fair is named for onions, the majority of food served at the event is onion-free. There are cheap options such as the typical Portuguese soup called Caldo Verde and the sausage Chorizo for 1 Euro each. I was hoping to grab a dinner here and have raunchy onion breath for the rest of the night so that I could breathe on my enemies and make them pass out from the potency. Unfortunately, not all your dreams come true. I just spewed some green chunks of Caldo Verde on my enemies instead!! There are costumed ladies who sell braided onion stalks. They were even nice enough to pose for a couple of pictures. Leave a Comment

It's a given. You're traveling to Coimbra to see the famed University. It's the life of this city. The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290, making it the third oldest in Europe. However, the University did not take home to this campus until 1537. The current campus was once the Royal Palace of Coimbra. This world-renowned university is the most famed in Portugal; I have known foreigners to study here for various reasons. Perhaps the most entertaining time to visit is in the beginning of May when the annual "Queima das Fitas" (ribbon burning festival) is held. Read my local customs tips for more information. The Torre (tower) in the 2nd picture is affectionately called "cabra" (goat). Leave a Comment

Coimbra's newest bridge by arasnosliw A new, modern bridge called the "Ponte Europa" (now changed to "Ponte Rainha Santa Isabel") was built for the EURO 2004 Football Championships and was inaugurated May 30, 2004. The event boosted Portugal's economy and many new infrastructures were built to cater to the influx of tourists. This bridge crosses the Mondego River south of the main thoroughfare, the Ponte Santa Clara. Leave a Comment Directions: crossing Mondego River

cross the Mondego by arasnosliw The Saint Clara bridge is the main bridge crossing the Mondego River leading to the main square, Largo da Portagem, in Coimbra. Coimbra lies on the east bank of the Mondego River. Although most attractions lie on this bank, there are a few points of interest on the west side (i.e. Portugal dos Pequenitos) Leave a Comment Directions: crossing the Rio Mondego

standing tall and proud by arasnosliw There is a statue of Joaquim António de Aguiar in the main plaza (Largo da Portagem) - He was a Portuguese politician in the late 1700s and lived for more than 90 years. As a prominent figure of the University of Coimbra and the city as well, it's no question that there is a statue in his memory at the entrance to the city center.
