Penela castle is a quite old castle. The name has several possible origins. Some say it is celtic, others that the first king of Portugal when conquering the castle said “temos o pé nela” something like we have the foot in but most say it comes from penha (hill).
It is believed pre roman people already lived in this area but the castle is at least as old as the XI century.
Inside there is also a church from the XVI century but whose origins go back to the XI century.
