    Castle

by salinhopt Updated Mar 1, 2004

From the ramparts of the Castle of Queen Saint Isabel, which dates from the 13th-century reign of Dinis, the plains of Alentejo spread out before you. Drive to the top of the Upper Town and stop on largo de Dom Dinis. The stones of the castle, the cradle of the town's past, were decaying so badly that the city leaders pressed for its restoration in 1970.

    Rua direita

This street was once the main street of Estremoz. The houses inside the castle walls are very well preserved and show very well how difficult it was to raise a family in such a small space. The villge still preserves the wonderfull cobbled streets.

    Misericordia Church

by salinhopt Updated Mar 2, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Built in 1539, the church of the Misericordia located on Estremoz's large market square was once a convent of the Knights of Malta. The street-level galleries of Eestremoz's municipal museum showcase an impressive display of little clay figures called bonecas, for which the town is most famous.

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A Chapel that is aptly named after this kindly Queen, records the story of her life in 18th Century tiles and in particular the “Miracle of the Roses”. The fable tells that when carrying money for the poor hidden in her apron the King stopped her and upon his request she opened the apron to reveal only some roses.

In the Town Square there is the remains of a fine palace that was once belonged to Dom Dinis and now is used as the Municipal Museum. On display is a collection of archaeological finds and several rooms have been restored to show off their original splendour.

    Square - Pelourinho

In this square many men and women had been hanged. In Portugal these squares are called "pelourinhos", and there's a pelourinho in all historical citys and villages. Many pelourinhos date from the XVIIth century.

The castle city is like a fortress, and there are many doors that will lead you to the walled city. Today, you can take your car inside and visit the city but before these doors were well kept by several guards.

I found no information about this beautifull church. Inside you'll find great wood carving and gilding as many blue tiles, the famouse portuguese azulejos. I think this church dates from the XVII century.

The lake is placed next to Rossio, the main square. This lake dates from the XIXth century and has a fabulous saint Augusto in the midle. From here it's possible to see the Castle Tower and the old Palace.

    Military Ceremony

    by Martin_S. Written Jul 16, 2011

We arrived in Estremoz to visit the castle and as we entered the town found ourselves in the middle of blocked streets and the access to the castle closed. We saw military formations and quickly found parking nearby. The entire center of town was closed for the ceremonies we found there. Tried asking a few people about what this celebrated, but none of the people I asked knew English and I am sorry to admit that I know only a few words of Portugese. If anyone knows what this was celebrating or remembering, I would like to know so I can post it here. The date was April 9th.

I found this building in the centre of Rossio, the main square in Estremoz. The architecture is very strange. I've never seen nothing like it before. Can someone help me out? :)

The high tower named Torre das Tres Coroas reaching to 27 metres is the dominate feature of this town. Rising from above the castle walls it is named after the period in which it was built.
