  • Portas de Moura Square

    Évora Favorites

Just outside the old city of Evora is the Largo da Porta de Moura. In the center is the marble fountain you can see here. We found it a nice cool place to sit on the marble sides, dip our hands in the cooll water and get some respite from the hot and humid day.

    Évora Favorites

Just a few extra views and thoughts on Evora's Se. In the first photo you can see Zohara pointing upwards at a doorway in the middle of a wall, yes a doorway. Doorway to where, well your guess is as good as mine, I just hope that there was a sign on the other side of the door saying "watch your step". Several paintings we found at the Se were in...

  • Convents

    Évora Favorites

While visiting the Temple to Diana we passed by the Convento dos Loios and decided to visit there also. As you can see it has a nice decorative entrance arch with some statuary and inscriptions, including what looks to be a tomb in the floor. We entered and found to our surprise that the entire convent had been turned into a Pousada (see...

  • Praça do Giraldo Main Square

    Évora Favorites

Praca do Giraldo. With a public arcade on one side, this square acts as a kind of city forum, enlivened by its welcoming and friendly pavement cafés and with a beautiful sixteenth-century marble fountain surmounted by a bronze crown. The far end of the square is occupied by the Igreja de Santo Antão, built between 1557 and 1563.

Portuguese late gothic style had to branches: mudejar with arab influences which also appeard in southern Spain of course, and the Portuguese Manuelino, that comes after the name of the King in the Discoveries times. I took the picture from the part you ca't really see any...

Templo de Diana. wonderful place to visit. pure history being seen by your eyes. Its amazing how a thing build so long ago is still up in such a place. People usually go up the temple even with a sign saying NO CLIMBING PLEASE! I for many times told people to respect the archeologic site and not to ruin it by climb it and taking pieces of rocks...

    Évora Favorites

I traveled to Évora on one of the hottest days of the year, mid-August, when temperatures rose in the Alentejo over 110 degrees F. I was shocked to see that even amidst the dry, desert climate, flowers still abounded. There are beautiful pink geraniums that line every street of the city, adding a great contrast to the whitewashed walls of the...

    Évora Favorites

Évora is one of my favourite cities in Portugal. It is not that far from Lisbon and access is good (highway) so we often use it as a weekend getaway or simply to do a pleasant daytrip with friends, to enjoy fantastic restaurants – food there is great, and so is wine. Évora’s beautiful old city is built inside a castle’s walls and all through the...

In winter time when fog is covering all the city, you can stare amazed to the old buildings lighten by this...

The most notable feature on the façade is the porch with its arches built in different styles, both pointed and horseshoe, a typical example of the “marriage” between the Gothic and Moorish styles that is typically found in so many monuments in this region of Portugal. The church has the peculiarity of consisting of one single nave ribbed...
