  • Chapel of Bones

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Évora Things to Do

Maybe it would be advisable for the most impressionable people not to visit this chapel - you will be submerged under thousands of bones, in a gloomy but also harmonious image. The bones are not only piled, they were used to artistically compose structures, rhythms and images with aesthetics concerns.

    Évora Restaurants

The good typical dishes from Alentejo, are prepared with conscience and respect for costumers and traditions. Going in a low season day, we found a service in a normal rhythm, unusual in those latitude. The three usual speeds in Alentejo (slow, very slow and stopped) were not respected, and we finished lunch in a very acceptable time, with a nice...

  • S. João church

    Monsaraz Things to Do

Discreetly lined with the white houses, there's a small church that (it seems - I couldn't read much about it) is dedicated to St John. It was closed, so I don't know how to visit it (and if it deserves to be visited or not)

By the church, in the northern side of the small square, there's an interesting building called "Antigos Passos da Audiência". I tried to read about it, but, so far, I couldn´t find much. It is a building from the 12th to the 14th century and its name suggests that it was used as a local court.

We arrived in Estremoz to visit the castle and as we entered the town found ourselves in the middle of blocked streets and the access to the castle closed. Vila Viçosa Things to Do

Vila Viçosa has been a safe retirement place to the royal family, in some historic crises. The signs of it are still present, with the palace and hunting gardens dominating a beautiful and peaceful town, where it is easy to learn why "Alentejanos" are famous for their... rush and general speed (!).

The Olaria shop is on the main street of Sao Pedro do Corval and just one of many. We searched through about 5-6 shops and some were threadbare and some were colorful. In the Olaria we found the largest assortment of ceramics and lots of choices for gifts to take home.

What to pay: Anwhere from 2-3 Euro all the way up into 100's of Euro.
