On the Praça da Republica you can see the Paços do Concelho (Old City Hall), from the 17th century where now is located the Municipal Library.
Also you can see the Nun’s Fountain from the 17th century and the bust in bronze from the ancient president of the municipal region Antonio Isidoro de Sousa (1943-1914)

Located on the hill side of the mountain range of Viana, from its name São Pedro (Saint Peter) not much is known about its foundation and creation from which seems to be connected with late gothic Portuguese manuelino style.

Viana do Alentejo portugal

On the morning of 25 April 1974, troops loyal to the Armed Forces Movement (MFA - Movimento das Forças Armadas) overthrew the 48 year old Portuguese dictatorship, ending a regime that they created in 1926.
This simbolizes the freedom of Portuguese people from the dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar.

This fountain is now National Monument.
The abundance of water turns the fields around it into vegetable plots and green farmlands and fills the town?s streets with fountains: one of the most interesting is the marble spring at the Pra?a da Rep?blica, built in one of the walls of the old Town Hall.
17th cenuty fountain.

Founded by many single and widowed women in 1548. This had permission to build it by the Cardeal D. Henrique, Arcebisp of Evora in 1550.
The community was from Saint Agostinho and integrated itself in the Way Hieronimita from which in Portugal was the only house for women.

It was granted enormous money and many donatives were given: On of the biggest donatives came from the Evora's Arcebisp, D.Isabel de Bragança wife of the Infante D.Duarte, Duque of Guimarães. The convent had many farms and houses not only in Viana but also around the district.

It had capacity for more than 60 female monks.
The convent was closed in 1901 when only one monk was still alive and living there.

The adjacent 16th-century Mother Church inside the city's castle is ressembling a fortress with its crenellations and pinnacles, has a splendidly carved Manueline entrance and an imponent triple-naved interior.
