Acessible from outside but sharing the ticket, in the back, the Unfinished Chapels are a unique marvel. Dom Duarte, eldest son of João and Filipa de Lencastre, was the second king of Avis dynasty, and comissioned a royal mausoleum in the church that was the family’s masterpiece. With an octagonal shape, the chapel were never finished, which did not prevent his burial in place. With the works lasting for centuries, the original design was transformed by Dom Manuel’s architects, and evidence clearly the several styles (Gothic, and Manuelino). One late balcony in Renaissance style, flags the end of the works, already in th 17th century. Leave a Comment

Monastery of Sta Maria da Vitória, Batalha by bambino36 Built due to a promise made by King D. João I to the Virgin Mary, the monastery wasn't built in the exact location where the battle took place. The battle took place in S. Jorge, 2Km away (check my Porto de Mós page). The works on the monastery took place between 1388 and 1580, during six reigns - D. João I, D. Duarte, D. Afonso V, D. João II, D. Manuel I and D. João III, being this the last great monument of the portuguese gothic, to which was added the new manuelin art of the 1600's, symbol of the portuguese maritime expansion. Among other features, inside can be found the tombs of D. João I and his wife, Queen Filipa de lencastre, and also the tombs of their sons, amongst them Prince Henry the Navigator. visits Opens everyday from 9am to 5pm (winter) and 9am to 6pm (summer) The visit costs 4.5€ which I find expensive Leave a Comment Phone: (+351) 244 765 497

The Royal cloister was made by Afonso Domingues and Huguet, and it's interesting to observe the coexistence of both styles. In the XVI century manueline elements were added. From the Cloister you may access the Capitulo room, where is the tomb of the Portuguese unknown soldier. The exit will be through the Afonso V Cloister (unfinished) and the dining room, used as a small museum. Don't forget to enter the unfinishe chapels, a few meters at your right. Leave a Comment

Batalha - Portugal by solopes The splendour of Batalha is a challenge to each one's imagination. A Canadian couple (hello Klaudia and Joe) used VT to know something about the place, and we ended meeting in Nazare and going there together. They sure enjoyed the cathedral, and Joe surprised me, showing that, no matter how well you know a place, there is always a new angle to explore. I'm expecting to see that photo in VT. by leffe3 One of the highlights is this small chapel, found immediately to the right of the main entrance. Within this chapel lies the tombs of Joao, victor of the Battle of Aljubarrota, and his English wife, Philippa of Lancaster. Hands clasped together, here lies the foundations of one of the longest global relationships between two countries. 1373 had already seen a pact agreed upon between the two countries: 1385 saw English 'troops' help Dom Joao defeat the Castillians: 1386 saw the signing of the Treaty of Windsor for relationships 'in perpetuity', including the marriage between Joao and Phillipa. The alliance was reconfirmed in 1661 (another royal marriage), in 1703 (trade agreements) and as recent as 1982 with the Falklands War. Who would have thought it? Also buried in the chapel is their son - perhaps the most famous of Portuguese royalty - Henry the Navigator. Leave a Comment

by leffe3 Spectacular cloisters are to be found at the monastery, the Gothic being added to as they were in Manueline style by Diogo de Boitaca, regarded as the greatest exponent of the style (and who was responsible for the stunning cloisters at Monasteiro Jeronimos in Belem, Lisbon). by leffe3 These are a completely separate structure from the rest of the Abbey and are only accessible from outside the main complex. They were commissioned in 1437 as a Royal mausoleum, but were changed beyond any recognition form the original designs by yer man Dom Manuel and Manueline architecture. The chapels are an extraordinary sight. Not only because they are unfinished, but because, in the true sense of the word, they are not even Manueline. Every centimetre is carved - weird vegetables, stone snails, arches, flowers, abstracts. But there is also something vaguely Islamic, even HIndu, about the place - believed to be as a result of the influences of some of the stories that were filtering back following the great voyages of discovery in the Middle east and India. Batalha Monastery, Batalha by bambino36 Also known as the Pantheon of King Duarte, the Unfinished Chapels - so called because their construction work was never completed - were built in 1435 decorated with a fine carved stone work in manueline style. The chapels look out upon an infinite sky and seem to be suspended mysteriously in mid air. Leave a Comment

Batalha Monastery, Batalha by bambino36 This gothic work was built during the reign of D. João I, in the 16th century. The arches overlooking the garden were built later, during the reign of D. Manuel I, and were embellished in a manuelin style, displaying the emblems of D. Manuel I, the Cross of the Order of Christ and the armillary sphere. Leave a Comment

Batalha Monastery, Batalha by bambino36 Inside the Unfinished Chapels can be found the tomb of the first king of the Avis dynasty, D. Duarte, lying here hand in hand beside his wife, Leonor of Aragon, who, after her husband's death, began to sign her name with the title of the “sad queen”. Leave a Comment
