    Cats all over the place

by porteda Updated Oct 20, 2004

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: If you're a cat fan, like I am, you'll be thrilled to see many of these felines in Obidos' streets. They seem to be quiet tame and so used to seeing people that their sleep is note even bothered by it.

    Obidos is Located HERE

    by Bwana_Brown Updated Oct 16, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: We spent only about 2 hours in Obidos as we passed through the area between our beach stops at 'Praia de Mira' (just south of Aveiro) and 'Ilha da Berlenga' (just off-shore from Peniche) due west of Obidos.

The next day, we left from Peniche for a quick drive to Lisbon on the big divided 4-lane highway system in this part of Portugal. This whole area has lots of great tourist destinations within easy reach of the Capital, so they tend to be busier than most of the other places that we visited.

    Small streets

by TinKan Updated Jun 9, 2004

Favorite thing: The town is quite small and is filled with walking roads. I would recommend that you walk down each of the little streets to see some of the shops and great places to eat.

Fondest memory: The small streets and as always... the people... I think that the Portuguese are some of the best people in the world.

    Narrow cobbled streets

    by micas_pt Written Feb 9, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: As most Portuguese cites and towns, Obidos is not a plain village, so you will be walking up and down its streets and alleys. Streets are narrow, winding and cobbled and you will come across some nice alleys facing the flowered courtyards of the tiny houses. Walking through these streets is fantastic, but be sure to escape from main street and get into “off the beaten path” streets, alleys and stairs. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost, as Obidos is a very small village and most side streets lead to main street or the castle’s walls. Venture into some of these side streets and wander around, I’m sure you won’t regret. But don’t forget to take comfortable shoes.

    Architecture

    by micas_pt Written Feb 9, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Obidos is a lovely medieval village. Everything seems to be in perfect order. I’ve been told that it isn’t allowed to build new houses inside the walls and that refurbishment has to keep certain patterns. The houses are lovely, as they are small, painted white with yellow or blue stripes. And most of them have flower vases hanging on the windows, making the streets a joyful place on spring and summer sunny days. Churches are also very pretty, most of them with beautiful azulejos (tiles), paintings and frescoes. Baroque style architecture or in other forms of arts such as azulejos (hand painted tiles) is easy to find in Obidos.

    Location

    by micas_pt Written Feb 9, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Obidos is located on the district of Leiria, on the Centre/South of Portugal, close to the coast, and it is about 80 km distant from Lisbon. Actually, i think it is closer to Lisbon than to the capital of this district – Leiria.

Favorite thing: Before entering the Village Door there is the Tourism Office. It is a small building with and glass front and yellow stripe around. There they will provide with the information you need and offer a map of the village with all the must see places. In Portuguese Tourism is Turismo.

    Azulejos

by Imaniac Written Jan 21, 2004

Favorite thing: Azulejos are the famous Portuguese tiles. Most of the time they are blue and white. If you whatch closely you can see them at a lot of spots in Obidos. A particulary nice place to see them is the entrance gate. You can also buy an azulejos souvenir in one of the shops on the main street.

    City Walk

by Imaniac Written Jan 21, 2004

Favorite thing: Take a stroll through the city, you won't regret it. Each and every building in Obidos is protected by the government. The windy and sometimes narrow streets are lovely to wander around in. Be amazed by the many beautiful white plastered buidlings. Go and have a refreshment on the main street, or buy some typical Portuguese souvenirs. You may also want to walk on top of the city walls. From there you'll get a great view of the city.
