by quartinb __________________________________________________ he nearby obidos lagoon, the largest in Portugal, was originally an inlet on the coast, at a time when the sea used to bathe the foot of the hill on which the town of obidos is located. as the sea gradually receded, this area was almost closed, becoming a favourite spot for fishermen due to the abundance of fish in its waters, and nowadays it is a popular summer resort. ____________________________________________ Leave a Comment

by micas_pt Inside the church, you will notice it has a hexagonal shape instead of the common rectangular shape. This church has 3 chapels – the main one and 2 on both sides (of the main altarpiece). The ceiling is very high with natural light coming from the windows and it has simple, but nice, paintings on the hexagonal shaped ceiling. There are beautiful azulejos (Portuguese tiles) inside, and a kind of balcony made of marble. I’m not sure about this particular church, but all other churches in Obidos (inside the walls) close at 5pm. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt Outside the walls and for 3km spreads an aqueduct. This aqueduct was built in the 16th century and was ordered by Queen D. Catarina de Austria. The Queen paid for the construction of the aqueduct and received for herself a meadow, which is now known as Queen’s Meadow. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt This church stands just outside the walls, and you won’t miss it when arriving in Obidos through the Village Door. The church was ordered by Queen Saint Isabel in 1309 and later refurbished and extended in the 16th century. Nowadays it houses the Parish Museum. As in many villages in Portugal, this church is adjacent to the cemetery. Leave a Comment

by micas_pt This sanctuary is located outside the castle’s walls, but it is at a short distance, so it is easy to walk there. From the outside, it doesn’t look as a traditional church, but still its architecture is quite interesting. It has a kind of round shape to which adds three other shapes – 2 of them corresponding to the towers and one to the sacristy. Inaugurated in 1747, this sanctuary is considered as one of the main Baroque buildings in Portugal. Leave a Comment

by ncfg The Óbidos Lagoon is the largest in the country. A large water stretch, 6 km long by 2.5 km wide, divided by four branches and some small gulfs. It joins the ocean at Foz do Arelho. It is an ideal place for the practice of several water sports, such as rowing and windsurfing. The lagoon is also an excellent site for those who enjoy fishing. The traditional, gondola-like, fishing boats, called "Bateira", can be used for a trip over its calm waters. Leave a Comment

Óbidos Lagoon by ncfg Well, i decided take place the hotel Inatel Foz in Off The Beaten Path because it is situated by the sea in Foz do Arelho just faced to the Óbidos Lagoon. It was a great experience to admire such beauty when you go to the balcony room of the Hotel. Take a look at the pic. On the pic you can see where the sea joins to the lagoon, quite amazing. Foz do Arelho is not far from Óbidos and this hotel is located at Rua Francisco de Almeida Grandela, 2500-478 Foz do Arelho. Leave a Comment

by ncfg It is located out side the walls on the road leading to Caldas da Rainha. It is the Sanctuary of the Lord of the Stone from 1747. It combines a Cylindrical outer shape with a hexagonally-shaped interior, to which are attached three turrets corresponding to the chapels inside. It is beautiful inside, worth a visit. In the pic it is a little far but you can see it. Leave a Comment

picturesque by arasnosliw Just outside the town walls, on top of a hill, an old windmill stands tall. I don't know if it still functions or not, but it seems rather iconic. To me, it represents a typical landscape of Central Portugal, something that should be in a picture book. You can view this windmill by walking along the wall on the part far from the Castle. Obidos - Foz do Arelho - Portugal by solopes Not far from Obidos there's a lagoon with the same name, communicating with the sea, that once came almost to town. Now it occupies a much smaller area , but it is still considerable. For further details see my %L[http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/9eab8/462d2/ ]Foz do Arelho page. Leave a Comment
