Ginja is a typical Portuguese sweet liquor and Óbidos is also known for making this popular drink out of fruits grown in the region. Recently it became very popular to sell Ginja on small Chocolate cups to those many tourists that visit Óbidos regularly. Each chocolate cup with Ginja costs 1 Euro. One savours the Ginja first, then eats the cup. This is great :) I do confess that whenever I visit Óbidos it's my personal ritual to enjoy Ginja on those little Chocolate Cups. ehehe :)

Bringing Water to the Town by Bwana_Brown While still perched on our tower (there was only one other couple up there - loaded down with major photographic equipment), we turned our view to the east for a great view of this aqueduct. I am always impressed by the style and longevity of the architectural marvels of the ancient world - why can't we build things like that now? This 3-km (2-mile) marvel was constructed in 1573 to bring water to Obidos, on the orders of Queen Catherine of Habsburg. This was a strange time in the history of Portugese Royalty. The linear King, Sebastiao I, was only 3 years old when he became King in 1557 on the death of his grandfather, King Joao III. Because of his tender age, his Spanish grandmother Catherine (wife of Joao III), became the Regent until Sebastiao came of age to assume the duties of King in 1573. He disappeared along with his army in 1578 during an ill-starred invasion of Morocco. This threw the legitimacy of Portugese royalty into such disarray, that they fell under Spanish occupation (1580-1640) shortly after this aqueduct was completed. Taking Refuge from the Busy Street by Bwana_Brown As we walked through the beautiful southern gate in the walls around the town, we were surrounded by a large group of French tourists and their guide who was shouting out various points of interest to them. In order to escape this moving mass of people, we immediately turned onto the stone steps just inside the wall, and began our climp up toward the tower at the south end of the village (my opening photo was taken from the distant tower in this photo). It was nice to get a bird's eye view while we enjoyed examining these old walls, built in the 1300's after the town was given by King Dinis as a wedding gift to his new wife, Isabel of Aragon. The importance of this town was originally due to its role as a port. However, siltation over the next 200 years gradually made it unuseable. In fact, it now seems that Obidos is quite distant from any useful access to the Atlantic Ocean. As we wandered along here, we could look down into the backyards of some houses that we had just passed, hearing and seeing their chickens clucking away as they pecked at seeds. Leave a Comment

Another Overview - From the Southern Tower by Bwana_Brown We took our time ambling along the wall, taking photos. However, 20 minutes after passing through the gate, we were on top of the southern tower after climbing up its stone steps. It provides a great view in all directions, this particular shot being a variation of the one on the opening page, showing the small houses that we had walked past as we traversed the lower walls. The entire narrow town is sheltered by these walls, with the large towers keeping watch at either end of the settlement. Leave a Comment Address: Obidos

Óbidos' Castle - Medieval Fair 2006 by MarioPortugal, 1 more photos Since 2002 an annual Medieval Fair has been taking place in Óbidos. The event provides visitors a genuine "dive into to the past" (I'm quoting here the official program). :-) It's a fun thin to see. Improvised medieval shops are all over and hundreds of volunteer actors show off their costumes. Visitors might need need to exchange Euros for old (medieval) coins to proceed with their purchases at the shops. Click here to play my 13 seconds amateur video recorded in Óbidos on July 18, 2006. This video features Medieval folk music. Medieval games and costume-dressed actors interact with visitors for fun. This Medieval Fair is definitely a great history lesson for any children & adult visiting. Suggestion: check out my travelogue for more pictures of Óbidos' Medieval time.

Igreja Santa Maria & its Tree by Bwana_Brown As I stood there in the very centre of Obidos, I was quite taken by the very impressive tree growing outside the Church of St. Mary. VT-member 'JLBG' tells me that this is probably a Plane tree, old specimens of which grow to enormous girth with wide-spreading branches. Actually this parish church, built in the 1100s, is itself quite famous, most notably as the place of marriage for the future King Afonso V to his cousin Isabel in 1441. It happened that he was 10 at the time and she was 8 !! The interior decor is also supposed to be quite something to behold, but, as usual, we did not have enough time to take a look! One of My Favourite Plants! by Bwana_Brown No Portugese town of village would be complete if it did not have an abundance of beautiful vegetation adorning its buildings! Obidos was no exception, and I was really struck by this beautiful red Bougainvillea vine growing beside this old doorway. Scratched in the block of granite over the door was the incription 'SEE 1638' - so I take it that this is a very old door! I have such pleasant memories of my days in Africa, where I first noticed this type of vine, that I always love to see them!! They have such a great variety of colours too - there was a purple one growing next to this one! Leave a Comment

"Once the wedding present of a queen, the preserved medieval town of Obidos lying 100 km north of Lisbon is without doubt one of Portugal's most classic walled settlements. Walking the ramparts, visitors can enjoy views of windmills, vineyards and surrounding farmlands. In the residential area below, narrow cobblestone streets are lined with whitewashed houses sporting terracotta roofs. The shops are piled high with local handicrafts, while in spring the town is ablaze with geraniums, morning glories and bougainvillaea" (from http://www.portugalvirtual.pt/_tourism/costadeprata/obidos/index.html) Yes, I agree and couldn't write it better, always feeling good in Obidos! A Quaint Street in Obidos by Bwana_Brown Obidos was a very nice town to stroll about. Here is just a typical scene, showing the streets paved with hand-cut stone blocks and the typical white-washed buildings. The colourful blue 'azulejos' and yellow decortive paint stripes are found all over this region of Portugal - the Estremadura. I believe that the building shown here, on the edge of the main town square, is the 18th century manor house known as the Solar da Praca de Santa Maria. The tiled roofs, flower pots by the windows and the beautiful chimneys all make this a very scenic spot! Near the end of our wanderings, we were getting both hungry and thirsty. We stopped at a bar in a building similar to this one, but they seemed a bit busy and we realized that our 2-hour parking meter was about to expire. We had to cut and run before we could sample any of the delights of Obidos. It actually turned out to be a good thing, because when we did reach Peniche about 30 minutes later, the last boat of the day for 'Ilha da Berlenga' was just about to leave!
