Being such a lovely village and somewhat close to Lisbon (making it a perfect daytrip from this city), Obidos is a very touristy destination. Not only foreigner visitors, but also locals, who often make a daytrip here on weekends when weather is fine. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend a visit to this enchanting medieval village.

If possible, visit during weekdays and avoid weekends and bank holidays.

I’d risk saying that all shops on main street are over priced. Being such a touristy destination, the arts crafts shops on main street have increased their prices and you will probably pay more than you should for most things you buy. Some of them pretend to be arts craft but they are manufactured in factories and you may find loads of them somewhere else.

Before you decide to buy something take a look into several shops. Check prices and diversity of products before making your choice.

The entire village of Obidos has become a tourist trap. Although the village still maintains its charming nature, there are hordes of tourists that day-trip here every day of the year. Its proximity to Lisbon makes it one of the most popular day trips. Independent travelers and organized tour participants alike all head here, and by noontime the village is packed like sardines with an interesting mix of ethnicities. The souvenir stores on the main street are over priced as well as the wine and ginjinha shops.

Despite the fact that Obidos has turned into such a mainstream tourist destination, I have no regrets visiting because it is just too beautiful to pass up.

Come here during the winter months. Although it may be less colorful due to lack of flowers, the crowds will be minimal and enjoying the village will be that much more enjoyable.

Escape off the main road through town and get lost in the confusing maze of streets. You'll find cheaper restaurants and stores off the main street. Also, there are plenty of beautiful things you'll encounter that most people miss.

I visited in mid-February and the streets were relatively empty for the most part, but I'm sure it would be spilling over with tourists during the high season. If you stay off of the main street, Rua Direita, you're likely to find some quiet spots.

  • This medieval town has evolved into a town catered to tourists. Everywhere you look there is a tourist shop. However, the medieval structure remains. To make it more enjoyable, look around the inside of the shops because they have not changed the height of the ceilings or the doorways.
