Our is the Middle of the 3 Grey Cars by Bwana_Brown Our little Fiat Punto rental served us well on our tour of the Portugese countryside. By this, the 9th day since we had left Lisbon, it had racked up 2300 km (1420 miles) as we pulled into Obidos. Even with its small size, there were a number of historical towns and villages where cars were not allowed inside - and Obidos was one of them. We parked just outside the main southern gate in a metered parking lot beside the tourist information area. Things were starting to get a bit busier as we neared the Lisbon area, with quite a few large tour busses also parked there. In the end, we put enough money in the meter to give us 2 hours to tour Obidos on foot (we arrived at about 11:30 AM). Our real destination for the day was 'Ilha da Berglenga', just off the coast a few miles away in Peniche. The photo shows our car parked later that evening in the streets of Peniche, as we get a bird's eye view from our accommodations. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by micas_pt The best way to explore Obidos is on foot. No other way would be possible, as cars are not allowed inside the walls. Bring comfortable shoes with you since the streets are cobbled and going up and down, apart from stairs and walking on the castle's walls. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Big Blue Tour Bus by LoriPori Monday morning June 1, began veeeery early - like 5:00 a.m. as we were to get our tour bus at the SAS Radisson, near Campo Grande Metro Station in Lisbon for 8:30 z.m. and most of us were staying in Cascais. Our large group that was staying at Albergaria Valbom headed for the train station around 6:00 a.m. Most had to buy tickets (1.70 Euro) for the 6:30 train to Lisbon. When we arrived at Cais do Sodre Train station, we then headed for the Metro ( Green Line ) to take us to Campo Grande. We arrived in good time around 8:00 a.m. - even were there before Antonio. After we all availed ourselved of the washrooms in the SAS Radisson, we all piled into the big blue bus and we were on our way. Our first stop was Batalha Monastery. Then the glass-blowing factory where we had a wonderful glass-blowing demonstration and then it was on to Nazare' for lunch at Restaurante Sao Miguel. After lunch it was on to Alcobaca Monastery and finally Obidos. The bus driver got us back to Lisbon at the SAS Radisson. From there we got to the Metro (Green Line) to Cais do Sodre train station and finally headed back to Cascais. A long day but absolutely wonderful. Thanks so much Antonio and Avelino. It was fantastic. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

by micas_pt Obidos is about 80 km from Lisbon and it's easy to get there by car. There is a highway in Lisbon called A8 that takes you straight to the village, just follow the exit sign that says Obidos. You must pay a toll on highway - in February 2004 the toll was 5.30euros each way. Once you arrive to Obidos, you must park your car by the main entrance (Village Doors), as the cars are not allowed inside. You must pay to park your car, there is a park meter there - just insert the coins and leave the paper inside your car on a visible place. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by ncfg By car, departing from Lisbon, take the A8 highway and exit at the sign to Óbidos. From Oporto, take the A1 highway and go as far as Leiria, where you take route EN1 until Batalha (S. Jorge) where you follow the direction of Caldas da Rainha. Arriving at Tornada take the A8 (IC1) and exit to Óbidos. From Lisbon the distance is 73 Km, from Oporto it's 245 Km. Park outside the walls. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

you've gotta squeeeeeeze in there by arasnosliw Parking is a pain in the butt; just look at this photo. The roads are narrow, hilly, and bumpy, so unless you are as adept as the locals at navigating these ridiculous roads I would recommend not trying to park within the walls of the town. In fact, I don't think you can drive into the walled village unless you are a resident or merchant there. There are plenty of parking lots just outside the town walls that are easy to access; the walk into town is rather short. By the main entrance near the Porta da Vila and tourism center there is a metered parking lot. To avoid problems with driving and parking altogether, take a bus. Rede Expressos is the main national bus service, with services to Obidos from main cities such as Lisbon. Leave a Comment

by ncfg The better way to know and to explore the beautiful narrow streets, to admire the whitewashed houses still encircled by its imposing walls nestled on top of a sloped hill, is on foot. I did it and I loved any minute I was there. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
