 | Peniche Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 18 | | Cabo (cape) Cavoeiro is only 45 minutes walk from Peniche - or 5-10 minutes drive! but it took a while even with the car as i needed a number of stops along the route to get the photos and views i came across!! The light house area provided an official stopping and viewing area with good views over the nearby island of Berlenga, a coffee shop and decent public toilets. There are some interesting rock formations along the way and the deep blue water down below crashing white against the rocks or shore made some nice shots. On further there were even some quaint small farmlets or hamlets - whatever they are called but little houses with a farmyard around it fenced off with stone walls. half way along there were people all around the area sitting around picnicking - i guessed it was a market day but at the light house cafe there was a sign advertising a special day for Mary. These days a museum with mix of local archeology, natural history and craft displays and special exhibitions it is still possible to see the old cells and solitary confinement pens of the sixteenth century fortress which also served as a jail for political prisoners of the dictator Salazar through the 1950s and 60s. Open Tues to Sunday till 6pm, closes at 5pm in winter. Makes a scenic walk or drive along the road from peniche to the Cape Cavoeiro and its lighthouse. There are designated spots along the way for fishing so the locals seem to utilise them. Certainly nice spots to stop and admire the view or have a picnic! Leave a Comment Address: Road from peniche to the Cabo Cavoeiro

Our main reason for coming to Peniche was to make a cruise to the beautiful Berlenga Island that is a nature reserve with lots of seabirds and has only few fishermen families living there permanently. We did the cruise on the following morning. I don't remember the exact times but I think we left Peniche at about 9.30AM, arrived in Berlenga 45 minutes later and returned at 3.30PM. That was enough time to see the island and have a wonderful grilled fish meal there. It cost 17 Euro per person, of the 34 Euro we paid a deposit of 10 Euro when we reserved our tickets on the evening before. It is important to make the reservation the day before to make sure you'll have a place on one of the boats, especially if it is during the season. There is a certain amount of tickets they sell per day during the season. There are several companies. I don't remember the name of the company or the boat, but you can just go to the harbour and compare prices and options and take the one that suits you. We chose a small boat which was faster. We were only 12 passengers, all the others were Portuguese. The cruise itself and the island were one of the best experiences we had in Portugal. See my Berlenga page for more information and pictures. Bear in mind that if the weather is difficult, times will change and boats may be cancelled. The sea can be very rough and if you are sensitive it is a good idea to go without breakfast. Leave a Comment

Peniche is the usual and best starting point to a trip to Berlengas (Nazaré and S. Martinho do Porto are, also, possible starting points, but without commercial carriers, so, unless you have a friend with a boat, you must leave from Peniche). The biggest and most used boat is the popular "Cabo Avelar Pessoa" that you have to book in advance with Viamar - Tel. 262 785646. There are some alternatives with fishing boats (smaller and not so regular) of Nautipesca (tel. 91 7588358) or Berlenga Turpesca (tel. 262 789960) and others. Well integrated with Peniche, here and there seeming the last point of Carvoeiro, Berlengas are almost one hour distant, and the trip uses to be very emotive, due to the high waves in front of the Carvoeiro cape. I surely recommend the trip, but, don't forget, prepare it in advance: to protect the park the accesses are limited to a daily maximum, and in high season the boat is usually full (in winter there is no boat, and, in the other days... the sea decides! I had to look this information up, but I thought it would be interesting for you just as it was for myself. The Berlengas Islands were visited by Romans, Vikings, British Pirates and the Mourish. In the 16th Century, the monks of the Order of St Jeronimo, built the Monestary of Misercordia but due to the constant attacks of the pirates, only the ruins were left, and now there is a restaurant in that same spot (the joys of the modern days). Later on king João IV built the St João Baptista Fort that you can see in the picture of the previous tip. Its a protected area also because of two plants that dont exist anywhere else in the world, the Armeria berlengensis and Pulicaria microcephala. If you decide to camp, call the park in advance to get informed about the several limitations. They only provide electricity until 1AM, you must take your own drinkable water, and other stuff like that. It is not the right place to stay if youre looking for comfort Leave a Comment Phone: (351) 26 2787910

The best way to enjoy everything that Peniche has to offer is by walking around the village and those cliffs. Its a long walk but worth it. You should also cross to the Berlengas Islands, a natural reservation only 10 Kms off the coast (45 minutes by boat). During the summer, the boat leaves Peniche at 9:30AM and gets back at 4:30PM. There is also a small camping park at the islands. The first thing you will notice is the thousands of seagulls anywhere you go. At the peer you will find an information desk so you can get indications on how to explore the caves by boat and the local Fort. For being a protected area, between the people staying at the camping park and the ones going on the boat, only 300 people are allowed to be at the islands. Leave a Comment
