A BIT ABOUT CABO DA ROCA
Favorite thing: The CAPE is located 42 km. west of Lisbon and 18 km. west of Sintra. Its co-ordinates are inscribed on a stone plaque on the monument at the site. The cliff rises out of the Atlantic Ocean to approximately 140 metres above sea level. This wild and majestic site is continental Europe's most western point and a very popular tourist attraction.
CABO DA ROCA MONUMENT
Favorite thing: The stone monument has a plaque on it which reads:
CABO DA ROCA
Onde a terra se Acaba
E O Mar Comeca
Ponta mais ocidental do
Municepal de Sintra
Latitude 38' 47' Norte
Altitude 140 acima do nivel
Medio das aguas
Fondest memory: CABO DA ROCA
Where the land ends
and the Sea Begins
(Poet Luis de Camoes )
Most western point in
Municipality of Sintra
1979Cabo da Roca
Favorite thing: The red and white LIGHTHOUSE which sits on top of the cliff, watches over the sea to help seafarers on their journey. Construction of the Lighthouse was completed in 1772.
The Lighthouse stands 72 feet high, with square masonry tower and red lantern. It was automated in 1980.
CREEPING SUCCULENT PLANT
Favorite thing: Once home to a variety of plant life, the grounds of Cabo da Roca have been overrun with an invasive plant species, shown in my pic. The creeping, mat forming succulent species was introduced as ground cover by local residents several decades ago. Now it's everywhere.

Fantastic light game
Favorite thing: I had to share this photo with all of you. In my opinion it's the best photo i have ever taken. I took it when we were leaving and it was allready dark. I never thought that the camera could give these effects. I love this photo!
Favorite thing: The land beaten road of the Cabeço of the Carrascal you'll find many birds, as the Cartaxo-of-head-black person, the Warbler, the Pintaroxo and the Petinha. With luck it will be able to sight the rare Ferreirinha of the Alps, that occurs in this area during the Autumn and Winter.
The Natural Park
Favorite thing: In Pedra da Azoia the Gull-silver-plated can be observed, as well as the nests, that during the nest building phase, are located in small islands situated SE of the cape. In the road of the Esparregal can be sighted Peneireiros-common and during the Spring and the Summer, the Andorinhao-Real (local bird).
Azoia stone houses
Favorite thing: It is not possible to lose the typical houses made of stone in the village. There are many few remaining, unhappyly the locals did not have a great care in preserving the architectural patrimony architectural of the village.
Favorite thing: The peacefulness of Cabo de Roca is one of the things that I like about this area. (except when all the tourist are there)
You can take a walk down along the cliff side and just listen to the sea crashing into the rocks down below.
It is one of the first places we take people who came to visit us when we were living there and it is one that they always remember.

Favorite thing: This is another view of the light house. You can actually go inside the light house facilities I mean not inside the light house but inside the gate and area where the light house is constructed.
View of Light House from road
Favorite thing: The road that comes from Sintra. You can move to Sintra in 30 minutes by car. More or less 30km away.
Cabo da Roca landmark
Fondest memory: "Aqui... onde a terra acaba e o mar comeca..." Luis de Camoes, our great poet wrote this once in Lusiadas about Cabo da Roca. It means: "Here... where the land ends and the sea starts...".
Favorite thing: The sea around the cape is very, very rough so during winter it's quite dangerous to walk around the natural park borders. The scenary is breathtaking!
