    Ericeira beach

The ocean is cold, but there is plenty of sun.

The bed is 2 Euro and umbrella is 2 Euro, so you have to pay 6 Euro for two people. There are also free umbrellas provided by the town, but they are on the back of the beach....and there are no beds.

    St Pedro Church

by solopes Updated Feb 13, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This modest church from the XV century, has a rich interior, "impossible" to appreciate or to photograph under the dimmed light of a dark winter day (yes, in Portugal, there are a couple of dark days each winter!).

The cross at the entrance was built in the XVIII century.

    Mafra's harbour

by solopes Updated Feb 13, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When the kings started to use Mafra's palace, in the 16th century, Ericeira became the port for royal use. If was from there that our last king left to exile.

The city of Ericeira has grown, but the port seems to remain almost untouched. The (now) useless defenses are still present in the rocks.

    Fountains

by solopes Updated Feb 13, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Many beautiful corners of Ericeira are embellished by the old fountains, now useless, but still decorative, even under the rain.

They were built in the decade of 1920, when Ericeira became an important summer destination, needing to supply water to a few more thousand dwellers.

    Typical Houses

by solopes Updated Feb 13, 2013

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's nice to stroll in the old central quarter of Ericeira.

The old houses are maintained and painted according to the traditional colours, and the comercial activities are discreet, respecting the harmony of the whole.

    Beach

by solopes Updated Dec 26, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Why not? It is small, in the good days risks to be full, but it is there, the sun invites and, usually, is not dangerous. It never was my first idea in Ericeira, because... never happened, that's all.

Of course, this is only one of the main options nearby, not the best, to be honest, but really close to town.

    Praia do Sul

by solopes Updated Dec 26, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

At the southern end of town, this is, maybe, the best bet combining distance and quality. It's not difficult to walk there from town, and you'd better do it, because the parking is small.

A great hotel where I've never been - Vila Galé, a known chain - dominates the beach.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The beaches by Ericeira are long and wide and has a good surf.
Because of that surfers rom all over the world come there.
Be ware though that the waves are quite big and the water quite cold as this is the atlantic and the portugese west coast.
Nevertheless the beaches are real pretty and there is space for everyone.

At the north entrance of town, this small chapel stands alone in the middle of a parking lot, shared by cars and boats.

It's a simple building coming from the fifteen or sixteen centuries, with one particularity: all the interiot, even the roof, is covered by tiles.

    Entrance is free.

    Public Library

by solopes Updated Feb 13, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Ericeira's public library is installed in the Cultural House Jaime Lobo e Silva, maybe the most beautiful building in Ericeira.

With more than 17000 books and a multimedia section, it may be useful for those staying more than the few hours we always have in each (frequent) visit.

    Ericeira Streets - 4 of 4

    by el_ruso Written May 17, 2007

Ericeira is a surprisingly beautiful town that will charm you immediately and that you will never forget. Here streets are lined with typical whitewashed houses with blue window surrounds, and it shows that its residents are proud of it. It is very clean and well maintained.

Casa da Cultura Jaime Lobo e Silva

    by bambino36 Written Oct 9, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In the first half of the 19th century this building was a Chapel, which later was converted to a casino. In the 1980's the casino closed the doors and the building was acquired by the municipality, which converted it to a Cultural Center. The main facade was saved and restored, maintaining now the same look that it had in the past.

It is thought that the first houses of Ericeira were built in the place where this market-cross is found. It has sculptured the dates 1140, 1640 and 1940, respectively the Foundation of the Nationality, the National Restoration and the 800 years of the Foundation of Portugal
