The cheapest way to arrive to Lisbon by plane is using the low cost companies such as vueling (www.vueling.com, from Barcelona and Madrid), clickair (www.clickair.com, from Barcelona), Air Berlin (www.airberlin.com, from Palma de Mallorca), Easy Jet (Berlin, Basel, Berlin, Geneva, Liverpool, London, Lyon, Madeira, Madrid, Milan and Paris), BMI Baby (Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester).
The places with the cheapest prices are normally Madrid, Barcelona, Geneva, Milan and the UK.
Normally a plane from Madrid is less expensive than the train and save you some hours.

Lisbon’s airport handles both domestic and international and is located about 6.5kms (4 miles) away from the city centre. Many airlines service Lisbon including British Airways, Continental, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, LAM, BMI, Alitalia to name a few.

The airport is very close to the city, almot in the city itself, so that, you can reach the centre very fast.

* To/from the airport:
There are some buses: AeroBus (91) is a bit more expensive, but you can get a pass for the following 24 hours; other buses: 22, 44, 83 and 745. Obviously, it depends on where you need to go, but 44 and 745 (apart from Aerobus), go to Marqués de Pombal, then, down Avenida da Liberdade to Cais do Sodré.

Before i went to Lisbon i asked a friend of mine who lives there, whether i should go to my hotel (near Rotunda) by earobus or by taxi. He told me to take a taxi, but first to tell the cabdriver that i knew Lisbon and if he dared to ask more than 8 euros, that i would go to the police. But i didn't had any problems with them (neither there nor back). To Lisbon the cabdriver asked 7 euros and back to the airport only 6.50 euro. In both cases i gave them 10, which made them carry my lugage to the door.

You landed at Lisbon airport and want to get a taxi to your hotel. Is the taxi waiting line in front of the arrival terminal excruciatingly long? Well, then go back inside, walk one floor up to the departure terminal and exit the building and there you will most probably see lots of taxis waiting for you. Last time we saved at least an hour of waiting time this way.

Airport is rather nice, surprisingly small for a capital city. There is only one terminal. Taxi to the center should not be more than E10, and there is also a bus which will cost you even less.
The cafeteria downstairs is not great: they have cold sandwiches or can give you a hot tasteless hamburger. Once you pass the passport control there are duty-free shops and a much nicer food court.

I can say my whorst flight ever (and i did many flights in my short life), the plane was dirty, and some seats were detached from the floor.
Lot of strange noises coming from everywhere inside and outside the plane ?!?!?

Lisbon's airport lies close to the city centre in the northern suburbs about 6km out. After a few days in Lisbon you get used to seeing low flying planes over the city as they arrive and depart. The best way in to town from the airport is by bus or taxi. The 91 is the quickest bus but also the most expensive at 3 Euro. The 45 and 44 buses also go to the airport and a ticket on these is the standard bus fare of 1.20 but the journey as much slower with frequent stops. When I arrived in Lisbon I jumped on a bus straight away without checking if I had enough euro. The busdriver let me on even though I was 20 cents short - you wouldn't see that happening in Dublin or London.

We flew TAP Portugal from Newark, NJ to Lisbon (the only direct flight out of the US) and were happy with the airline. The airport is about 15 minutes north of the city center. You can also arrange domestic flights to Faro in the Algarve and Porto.

I flew into and out of LIS in 1993 on TWA 900 from New York and flight 901 back to New York. The airport screeners here have been known to go above and beyond the call of duty in terms of their intrusiveness and this was well before 11 September 2001. I did not sit there and take it, incidentally.
