Know about this?
I took this picture in Chiado in front of the Brasileiro cafe, a local institution. This beautiful woman was a reporter apparently doing some kind of newsworthy story from this location, but I have no idea what she was talking about since I don't speak Portuguese.
This area is one of the trendier and more fashionable parts of Lisbon and is full of great cafes and stores. You'll see plenty of young, hip locals hanging out just socializing and window shopping.
The Portuguese have a real sweet tooth so you will find some of the best pastries and cakes in all the little cafes. The 'national pastry' is considered to be pasteis de nata, which is a delicious custard filled tart. If you journey to Sintra you can find queijades de Sintra, which I foolishly thought would actually taste like cheese. They are very good regardless and have a nice cinnamon flavor.
You can enjoy these at the counter of a cafe with um bica (an expresso-like shot of coffee) or laze the afternoon at an outdoor table and people watch.
Portuguese drink coffee at any time of day. What some people don't know is that we drink small amounts of coffee at a time. So if you'd rather have a somewhat longer coffee ask for "cheio" (something like shayoo).
Portuguse in general use to drink coffee after every meal, so dont find wierd to see everybody drinking espressos!
In Lisbon , at least the nightlife begins very late. If you go to a disco at midnight you'll find it empty, or even closed....
now, here there are some translations just in case!
Good Morning: Bom Dia
Good Afternoon: Boa Tarde
Good Evening: Boa Noite.
I want an espresso, please: Queria uma bica , por favor.
