Parque Florestal de Monsanto
There lies a 1000 hectare park in the hills in Lisbon called Monsanto. It is one of the only forested areas in the city. It is frequented by outdoor recreationalists. There is camp grounds available here for the budget-minded (or adventuresome) traveler. During the summer, the park hosts a variety of free outdoor concerts. The view of the city is spectacular from here.
I hear it is a little sketchy here at night, so don't go wandering around the forests alone.
To get here by public transport:
Bus (Carris): 11, 14, 23, 24, 29, 43, 48, 70
Tram (Eléctricos) (Carris): 15, 18
Train: Campolide or Benfica stations

Fábrica Braço de Prata
Fábrica Braço de Prata began operating in 1908 producing essentially Artillery ammunition and being dependent on the Army Arsenal.
In June 2007, part of the former facilities of FBP were transformed into a private cultural center, which includes libraries, exhibition halls, cinemas and theater and concert hall music. The cultural center has adopted the name.
When entering a bar on the right - large living room, high ceilings and low lights, bargain books on the shelves, wooden upright piano between the two windows overlooking the garden: someone devised a living room rather than a bar; concert hall on the left, with a small stage and piano (and books around), a door to another room (more books), which gives room to another ... is a matrioska space, twelve rooms in total.
It's an alternative cultural space.

Visit a football stadium
Lisbon has 3 footballclubs playing in the Superliga; SL Benfica, Sporting Clube de Portugal and C.F. os Belenenses. Even if they don't have to play, the stadiums are worth visiting. You can also try to spot them from several miradouros.

For the third time in the race's history, the starting point will be Lisbon.
This year scheduled to start on the 5th January, will run a traditional course, passing through a total of four countries. The route to be taken by the 350 motorcycles, 220 cars, and 100 trucks registered will visit most of the African countries traditionally visited by the Rally.

And after all... navigation and discoveries (of course from a European perspective) ...
it all started here in Lisbon more than 500 years ago…

Watch airplanes or go to the cinema
Watching airplaines is easy....
The airport is very near to the city center.
Going to the cinema is also a good option when it rains. Actually in the eighties my wife and i went to Lisbon in winter three times.....just for watching new movies an eat good and cheap. In that time a pensao room was 9 euro....Prices are about half of what they are in the Netherlands. In Lisbon i saw for example: Something wild, the Fly, Blue Velvet, Mona Lisa, one of the James Bond. And alle where a few weeks earlier in release then in the Netherlands ! Something wild (Jonathan Demme) was a great experience. It was in summer, 30 degrees in the afternoon and the audiance on monday (extra discount) afterniin where ladies of 30-60, some whit their mother, children or girlfriend. Blue Velvet was a surprice. Didnt know David Lynch an was attracted by a blonde female on the picture and expecting a simple romantic tearjerker.

Portugal was awarded the 2004 European football championships. I was there during Euro 2000 (Portugal reached the semi-final, losing to eventual winners France) Huge rivalry between the Lisbon clubs Sporting and Benfica. Even more rivalry between the Lisbon clubs and Oporto in the north of the country. They love their football here and I think that 2004 will be a great time. Book your accomodation early.
Cinema - This is Lisbon and...
Cinema - This is Lisbon and not generally known for wet weather however, if you want to go to a cinema there are a few choices. In Colombo Centre there is a Warner Brothers (ticket office can get very crowded). In the centrum you'll find the Sao Jorge halfway up Avenue Liberdades on the left (before Hotel Tivoli). In Picoas/Saldanha you'll find the Residential and the Monumental. These last two are linked in that you can buy tickets at one when the film is actually being shown at the other (pay close attention to the screen number 1 to 4 is Monumental, 5 to 8 is Residential). Residential is also built just over Picoas metro so don't be surprised if you feel some vibration. Films are shown in original version with Portuguese subtitles. In the Sao Jorge the feature will be stopped halfway to allow for a break.
If you are interested in...
If you are interested in racing, especially formula one or motocycle racing, then visit the race track some kilometres north of Estoril. Ther is no formula one race at the moment, but maybe you will find some teams there for testing their cars. It is impressive, only to hear that sound.
This garden was dedicated to the famous Portuguese singer Amalia. Here it is possible to relax drinking a good coffee in the company of a beautiful water mirror.

Not really sure if it's so off the beaten path, but if you are into architecture do not miss the EXPO area on the shore north of the city centre.
