Lisboetas (inhabitants of Lisbon) are crazy about football and support either of the two major clubs, Sport Lisboa e Benfica (website: www.slbenfica.pt), and Sporting Clube de Portugal. Both are strong first-division contenders. Benfica play at the great Estádio da Luz (Stadium of Light called as the Cathedral by the supporters of Benfica ), where it will be the final of the Euro 2004 and others games of the Euro2004. Sporting play at the Estádio Alvalade XXI, just north of the Campo Grande (website: www.scp.pt). There are others clubs in Lisbon like Belenenses and Alverca but not so important. Bullfight is a very controvertial subject. I personally enjoy to see it. Bullfighting was once the sport of Portuguese noblemen. Unlike in neighboring Spain, the bull is not killed--a prohibition the marqu?s de Pombal instituted in the 18th century, after the son of the duke of Arcos was killed in the sport. Bullfights here differ in other respects from the Spanish version. Much ceremony and pageantry attend the drama: The major actors are elegantly costumed cavaleiros, who charge the bull on horseback, and ma?os de for?ado, who grapple with the bull. Many find this face-to-face combat the most exciting component of the bullfight. There are many aficionados in Portugal and Lisbon presents them a great venue to see a good Tourada - the Praca de Touros do Campo Pequeno. It was inaugurated in 1892 with a neo-Arabic style. It fits about 8.438 spectators. The bullfighting season in Lisbon runs from Easter until mid-July. If you like football (aka soccer) Lisbon will satisfy all you cravings! Lisbon has three teams in Super Liga (I division) - Sporting, Benfica and Belenenses. The championship follows the normal European schedule, i.e., from end of August until mid May. Portugal hosts the Euro 2004 championships, and for that occasion it was build 8 new stadiums. Sporting and Benfica's stadium are state of the art stadiums. Leave a Comment
