Estrada marginal - am not sure if it can be translated to marginal road - is the road going along the Tagus and the sea, between Lisbon and Cascais.
What's so special about this road? It's really scennic.
It was once the most dangerous roads in Portugal. Back then there was no fence between both directions. Also, the influence of the sea and the salt at the Tagus mouth, spraying salt and moister to the road surface, therefore making it slipery, caused many accidents. It was also thought that the beautiful landscape of the waterfront caused distraction in many drivers.
This road is a lot safer now. Throughout the road there are traffic lights forcing the cars to slow down and stop. There is a separation between both ways.
I do not advise anyone to use a car while in Lisbon, but if you use a car to go to the outskirts and go through this road, you won't regret the Cote d'Azur like views.

The most convenient way to come here is by train.
There are two different train rides departing from Cais do Sodré Train Station:
1- to Cascais. It stops in both stations Alges and Oeiras located on opposite ends of Oeiras municipality, but it does not stop in the many stations in between. You can use this train to go to Oeiras or the beach at Santo Amaro. It is faster.
2- To Oeiras. It stops in evey station between Lisbon and Oeiras. Ideal to reach the towns of Oeiras municipality other than the town of Oeiras, or Belém in Lisbon. It is slower.

Just wandering along the coast...

While walking along the beach from Carcavelos I became curious about the fort in the distance. So I continued to Oeiras and checked it out.
