Favorite thing: Fronteira is a county in the district of Portalegre in Northern Alentejo. This village was founded by the King D.Dinis. It was near this place that the battle of Atoleiros took place. It was in this battle that D. Nuno Álvares Pereira fought against the Spaniards, winning the battle with a new tactics called the square tactics. There are several monuments: There is a pillory or whipping-post and there are three churches, The Main Church, the Church of Our Lord of Martyrdom and the most famous one the Church of Our Lady of the Old Town, the town patron saint. It is said that in the place where today stands this last church, it was the place of the old settlement, where one could see three caves where Moors used to live. There is also a Roman bridge outside the town, that crosses a streamlet, tributary of Sorraia river. The most well known festivities are those in honor of Our Lady of the Old Town, on the 15 th August and 6th April. In the last couple of years there have been also a sportive event, a 24 hour cross-country competition. We also have a Municipal Market built five years ago, which promotes the regional arts and crafts, and where one can buy hand-made pottery as well as cow and sheep cheeses well appreciated by everyone. This is the town of my maternal grandparents.

Fondest memory: Fronteira is a small and quite paradise!
i can only have good memories from there

    Pelorinho
