Inside the Basilica by TinKan Begun in 1928 and consecrated on 7 October 1953, its 15 altars are dedicated to the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. The painting above the high altar depicts the Message of Our Lady to the little shepherds, prepared by the Angel of Portugal, through their encounter with Christ in the Eucharist. The Bishop of the diocese is shown kneeling on the left side, and the figures of Pope Pius XII (who consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1942, and whose Legate crowned the Statue of Our Lady in 1946), of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. Scenes of the apparitions are represented in stained glass, as well as invocations from the Litany of Our Lady. In the four corners of the Basilica interior are placed the statues of the great apostles of the Rosary and of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary: St. Anthony Claret, St. Dominic of Gusman, St. John Eudes and St. Stephen, King of Hungary. The tombs of Francisco and Jacinta are in the Basilica, and, in the chancel, are the mortal remains of D. José Alves Correia da Silva, first Bishop of Leiria after its restoration in 1920. The monumental organ, mounted in 1952, has about 12 thousand pipes. Leave a Comment

the colonnade by call_me_rhia The colonnade surrounding the esplanade, and running in the shape of a crescent to the left and right of the basilica, is an impressive piece of architecture. OK, it's not very original (you can see a similar, older and more impressive version in Saint peter's square in Rome - and yet it's the part I like best. On the colonnade there's a long row of statues - those of the 4 portuguese saints (St. John of God, St. John of Brito, St. Anthony and Bl. Nuno of Santa Maria) and other more international saints, including St. Teresa of Avila, St. Jonh Bosco with St. Dominic Savio, and St. Paul of the Cross. the esplanade by call_me_rhia the Esplanade is supposed tobe monumental: it's vast, wide, it's surrounded by a beautiful colonnade, there's an imposing flight of steps, there are Stations of the Cross in polychrome ceramic designs but... well, once its devoid of people it looks like a huge parking lot (I really thought it was one, at first). When full of pilgrims it should be a great sight - empty on a rainy day it looks very sad. Leave a Comment Address: fatimaDirections: inside the sanctuary

Fatima - Portugal by solopes Fátima has a wide reputation of miracles, thus becoming the meeting point of millions of visitors each year. A long walkway in marble is always full of people "paying" promises they made to the Virge, in any dramatic situation, whose good end they believe was due to the holly help. And halfway to the basilica, a smaller chapel signals the location of the tree where the apparitions were referred, is the ending point of walkway, and the meeting point for all the prayers. the chapel of the apparitions by call_me_rhia It's the heart of the sanctury of Fatima, and yet it's not its conspicuous monument: this chapel is where the Virgin Mary is supposed to have made her first apparition. The exact spot is marked by a the marble pillar on which the statue of Mary is placed. The construction is very simple - nearly bare - and from the distance it can easily be mistaken for a bus stop or a rest area. It's a place of prayer, not of photgraphs. the monument to the sacred heart of jesus by call_me_rhia Very little I could find out about the golden statue dedicated to the sacred heart of jesus, shining bright from the middle of the esplanade. All I know is that it's located over a spring found in that place. Water (says the official fatima site) is the instrument of many graces. Thousands of people visit this wonderful center of Christian faith, and we were so lucky to be able to go to it and even have mass and communion at the chapel right in the center of the grounds of Fatima. The mass was in Portugues though and the ceremony was very quick, maybe just about 20 minutes or so. The Basilica is where the tombstones of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco are along with the Chapel of the Apparitions. We were able to go to Fatima using the afternoon City Ram half-day tour which started at 230 PM. The tour only cost 59 Euro per person and it is a good 2 hour drive I think from Lisboa if I remember right (I fell asleep in the bus, lol) Leave a Comment

by ania70pl At the entrance of the Sanctuary, on the south side of the Rectory, you can visit a monument of the Berlin Wall's, consisting of a concrete segment that was part of it. This segment was offered by means of Virgilio Casimiro Ferreira, a Portuguese emigrant to Germany and is here placed as a grateful memorial of God's intervention for the fall of Communism as promised at Fatima. by ania70pl The heart of the Sanctuary. It was the first edifice constructed in the Cova da Iria, at the place of Our Lady's Apparitions. The exact spot is marked by a marble pillar on which the Statue of Our Lady is placed. Here converge the four million pilgrims who visit the Sanctuary each year. Leave a Comment
