There are a couple of supermarkets in the town, tucked away from the central square. The best one is on the Av. Dr. Candido Madureira, just after the roundabout coming from the Ponte Nova (New Bridge). This one is very modern, but there's an older one closer to the center at the convent end of Rua Alexandre Herculano.
Don't remember: Camera problems
I can't remember the name of the shop, but you can't miss it at the top of Rua Serpa Pinto where the street meets the bridge that spans the river. My buddy Pav's camera was acting up and he took it in to have this guy take a look. The man was very patient and took his time looking at the camera. He even partially dismantled it in order to assess the problem. Despite not speaking too much English he was able to demonstrate to us that the button used to snap the pictures was broken and that he would have to get that replaced to really fix the camera. In the meantime he gave Pav a tack that he could use to activate the button and sold him a couple of throwaway cameras in case that didn't work.
What to buy: The cameras were expensive in here, but it's a good place to ask for advice and buy some film if you're out.
