  • New cathedral

    Fátima Things to Do

After many millions and some polemic, the new cathedral is already working. Standing face to the other, it was decided to low it in the ground to preserve the image of the whole place. I didn't enter it yet, I don't know the advantages of a double cathedral, but I may confirm that the general look was not spoilt.

    Fátima Things to Do

This sanctuary can easily be reached by tourists from Lisbon, and many go here having heard the story of the three children who witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary on May 13, 1917. Fatima was then just a town dependent on producing olive oil and the children said that the Virgin Mary "appeared in a flash of light" in a field called the Cova...

Tomar is a goddamned noisy town. I went there for rest and relaxation, and while it was a relaxing town the noise levels prevented me from getting the perfect rest. Tucked away in a side street of Rua Infataria is the old Jewish Synagogue, now home to the Museo Luso-Hebraico Abraham Zacato. For a few years after the poisonous Spanish expulsion of the Jews many found shelter in Portugal, setting up in towns and cities like...

    Santarém Local Customs

Santarém is one of the most distinguishable cities of Portugal dealing with agriculture. The National Fair, the high school, and the cultural connections to the traditional activities are signs of the way that Santarém lives with nature. However, I was not expecting to find, in a gardened area in the centre of the city, the wonderful image of a tree...

Fifty years ago, Rio Maior was, for me, a garden surrounded by houses, with a small sporting field, where I went to play Hoquei on wheels or handball.Nowadays the field is gone replaced by modern pavilions, and the garden won an also modern church, but it is still there, respected by the city's development.Good!

Rio Maior Off The Beaten Path

About 10 km distant from town, the village of Alcobertas has a strange presence of a "cyst" by the church. It's a prehistoric dolmen with a silly top: a modern roof. I don't like the idea, but it is funny to see.

What a strange idea: In the positive side, they preserved the dolmen, and turned it evident in a curious integration with the church.

In the negative side they decided to cover it with a roof that looks... grotesque. Whose idea?

First and most important - HOW to find this place...enter Bathalha on your search...from there look south till you find the "Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeros".
Mira de Aire is on the south east part of the park.
But this place is well worth the drive and effort to find and explore. The drive through the various small towns in the area are also nice.
Those small blue and aquamarine spots you see on the photos are actually pools of water, apparently depending on the mineral that can be found there the light that is shining on the pools cause different colors.
