Situated with magnificent views on a spur of the Serra da Arrábida, Palmela Castle is one of the finest examples of Portuguese military architecture. Constructed by the Moors, it was rebuilt after the 12th-century Reconquest, but was partially demolished by the 1755 earthquake that laid waste to Lisbon.

The strategic position of this castle dominates the plain for miles around... Heavily defended by the Moors it was conquered in the 12th-century and given by King Sancho I to the Knights of the Order of Santiago who improved the walls of the headquarters and convent of the Order.

Next to the pousada (inn) inside the fortified walls you'll find the church of Santiago. Its interior contains the sepulchre of Jorge of Lencastre (duke of Aveiro, he was one of the masters of the Order) and a wall decorated with 17th and 18th-century tiles.
Below you can see some more pictures on the travelogue.
