Explore Sesimbra

Things to Do

The Castle

The Castle, Sesimbra

solopes Says:  A ruined castle on the top of the hill, is a place you must visit, more for the sights then for its own relevance. It has a history, yes it is interesting, but, believe me, when you reach the walls and see Sesimbra, you immediately forget what is closer to you. The best...

The Beach

The Beach, Sesimbra

solopes Says:  A long (here and there narrow) stripe of sand, lined by restaurants, and protected against north wind by the mountain, this beach challenges Nazaré for the title of the best structured beach on western coast. Nazaré has its people... Sesimbra one or two more degrees in water...

Cabo Espichel

Cabo Espichel, Sesimbra

solopes Says:  Cabo Espichel is a rocky cliff near Sesimbra, with good sights over the sea and a sanctuary dating from the 18th century and surrounded by several constructions in different styles. Pilgrimage, now abandoned, justified a local inn, still standing near the complex "Casa da...

Well located facing the sea, this restaurant serves several dishes of fish, with a careful and delicate preparation.

Price is high, but reasonable for the top quality.

Favorite Dish: Tamboril com molho de lavagante (Monk-fish with lobster sauce).
Espadarte à casa (Swordfish home style)

Casa do Infantada, seaside sunset

Casa do Infantada, seaside sunset, Sesimbra

Martin_S. Says:  One day we decided that we wanted to have a romantic picnic along the western coast of Portugal, so since we were staying in a B&B in the Sesimbra area, we got in the car and headed west and drove from south to north along the coast, looking for a place. We finally found...

Lagosteiros Beach

Lagosteiros Beach, Sesimbra

JPGoncalves Says:  Near Espichel Cape, inside the Arrabida Natural Park there is a very small bay with a rocky beach just acessible by jeep, amazing sunset and the place to be if you want a beach just for yourself, even in the summer.

The secret Cavalo Beach (Horse Beach)

The secret Cavalo Beach (Horse Beach), Sesimbra

JPGoncalves Says:  In the summer just gather some freinds and take "amunitions" to spend one night experience camping in this wonderful bay, take a guitar, music, beer and thats it, you will not wont to live in the next day. Its a hard track to get there down the cape but locals will tell u...

Cabo de Especial, go west to lands end, Sesimbra

Martin_S. Says:  Cabo de Especial is not in the VT database under any spelling that I tried in the Portugese, Spanish, English, or American maps that I used. But it IS there and the area is beautiful, "lands end" with its lighthouse and monastary. It was totally surprising to find a small...

getting lost in Sesimbra

getting lost in Sesimbra, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  I got completely lost when trying to walk back uphill to the bus station from the beach. At this point, my portuguese was rather decent, but every person I ran into was a tourist such as myself who had no idea where the bus station was because they drove.I was a bit frenzied...

rent fun boats

rent fun boats, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  You can rent these paddle-boats with slides attached to them. It seems like a strange novelty, yet they are extremely popular and on a sunny day everyone will be lounging about on them.

town

town, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  The town of Sesimbra is not as touristy towards the west. The east side of the beach is home to most of the hotels. It is amazing how walking a few hundred meters makes such a difference.Take the chance to walk thru here, rather than just spend all your time on the beach.

more freezing kids

more freezing kids, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  ....whereas these kids couldn't take the ice cold water anymore and were smart enough to get out and throw a towel on.

freezing water

freezing water, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  Even amidst the rain storm, a few brave souls decided to stick around the newly deserted beach to which they had all to themselves. I can't imagine wanting to swim in the cold rain, but these young kids had the guts to.

more street cafes

more street cafes, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  This restaurant was tucked amongst some tiny streets, rather difficult to find. You get a great workout climbing the hills of Sesimbra.

cafes

cafes, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  Along the narrow, steeply inclined streets of Sesimbra are outside seating for cafes. This is typical of any Portuguese city of course, but here in Sesimbra I felt the tilt (from the steep incline) working against me!

protect yourself from the sun/rain

protect yourself from the sun/rain, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  An entire section of the beach (the east side) is lined with poles. If you are wondering why there are so many poles here, it is because this area is designated for canopies and tarps and other things of that sort. Bring a canopy to the beach, set it up on the poles, and...

hotels

hotels, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  Like I've already mentioned, Sesimbra is not as touristy as other beach resort towns, but there is still a barrage of hotels stretching along the beach. It seems as if there are hardly any hotels aside from along the beach. Also, the tourists here seem to mainly be Lisbonites...

rugged cliffs

rugged cliffs, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  The rugged cliffs bordering Sesimbra to the east are part of the Serra da Arrábida (Arrabida mountains). From this mountain range are magnificent views of the Costa Azul. The range also is host to a beautiful park (Parque Natural da Arrábida) for all the nature lovers like...

red rusting lamp holder?

red rusting lamp holder?, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  Also at the Fortaleza de São Tiago is this lamp mounted onto this red rusty apparatus. I'm not quite sure what the purpose of this is, because the bulb doesn't seem strong enough to function as lighting.

walk on the fortress

walk on the fortress, Sesimbra

arasnosliw Says:  Walk around the Fortaleza de São Tiago for free. You can even sit in this turret if you can fit! I sat in the fortress and ate my lunch while observing the few beachgoers that remained after the storm hit.
