Train to Lisbon

  • Setúbal's main train station is located inland, with some distance from the harbour. It's is easy to walk though between the harbour and the main train station.
There is a secondary train station closer to the harbour: Praça do Quebedo. However this is not the station to use if you want to go to Lisbon,

Fertagus trains operate between Setúbal main railway station and Lisbon. The journey takes about 1 hour. In Lisbon, they stop in Campolide, Sete-Rios, Entrecampos and Roma/Areeiro stations. They go through Lisbon's 25 de Abril bridge when they enter in Lisbon.
This suburban train is run by a private company, with no connection with the Portuguese railways (CP). They have their own ticket windows, vending machines and ticket validation points in the stations.

Take a ferry to Troia, on the other side of the Sado river.
There are two types of boats: for passengers and for cars.
Both depart from Setúbal's center in the same location, but reach two different locations in Troia.

The passenger's boat goes to the northern tip of Troia, at the Sado's mouth, and it's the best choice is you want to go on a day trip to the beach. The beaches on Troia's Atlantic side begin some meters to the west, after crossing Troia's marina on foot. There are also beaches in the river side, eastwards.

A single ticket cost 2 euros for adults and 1 euro for children up to 10 years (Summer 2009)

The ferry for cars is more used by those who want to travel further south, along the Alentejo coast down to the Algarve.
It departs from Setúbal's center in the same location as the ferry for passengers, but heads to the south-eastern side of Troia, well inside the Sado river.
Passengers without a car can go inboard, but the destination in Troia is very far from both the northern tip and the Atlantic beaches.

Tickets for passengers cost the same as the ones to the other ferries. A ticket for cars cost 9.5 euros.

The Setúbal train staion is served by three lines: Fertagus (Setúbal - Coina - Roma/Areeiro), Linha do Sado (Barreiro - Setúbal - Praia do Sado), and CP Intercidade (Lisboa Oriente - Tunes - Faro). It is located near the northern end of the town, and it takes about 15~20 minutes to walk to the center of the city via the soccer stadium and Jardim de Bonfim. While the platforms are rather plain and normal, the front façade is embellished with the traditional pink-color building and azulejo-made station sign. It is located at Praça do Brasil.

    Fertagus: Crossing the Rio Tejo

Fertagus is currently the only train service that directly connects Lisbon with its southern subrubs all the way to Setúbal via Fogueteiro and Coina. Usually the trains from Roma/Areeiro terminates at Coina, but there are services all the way to Setúbal every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends. Owned by a private company, the Fertagus service offers wide and spacious 2-storey cars added with a great view of Rio Tejo and Lisbon while crossing the Ponte 25 de Abril. Tickets can be bought from automatic machines and information/ticketing desks at each station, and the options include 1-way and 10-trip pre-purchased tickets.

(P.S.) This is also my favorite means of public transportation system in Portugal!
