Viana do Castelo

  • Santa Luzia

Viana do Castelo Things to Do

It's "impossible" to go to Viana do Castelo without a visit to Santa Luzia. I've been there only once, and... went up, of course! It's not very representative (as a matter of fact it's a copy of Sacré Coeur, from Paris), it's almost empty, but it's interesting, and the climbing provides the best views of town.

  • Folklore

    Viana do Castelo Local Customs

The north of Portugal is the most traditionalist of all Portuguese regions. Minho has also the most beautiful traditional costumes. Aware of that, the city's celebrations are a very good opportunity to see and feel it. PS - I think that almost ninety per cent of the Portuguese folk recreations abroad use the costumes and dances of this area.

  • Igreja Matriz (Parish Church)

    Caminha Things to Do

A church in the plateresque renaissance style with an ogee apse. It's a three-naved building with one single tower, a fine example of late Romanesque art. It began to be built by the stonemason from Biscaia and Castile Tomé de Tolosa (1488) and was carried forth by Pero Galego. Inside it's possible to admire 17th and 18th century tiles as well as...

    Caminha Restaurants

If you are travelling by car, go and have dinner in Vila Nova de Cerveira. There is a little restaurant in a square in front of the church. This restaurant provides fabulous food and it’s very economic. I had a huge and tasty beef here and meal was very cheap. Deserts are also very good. Service back then was also great.

Ponte do Lima Things to Do

I've already described the lovely walk through Ponte de Lima's Avenido dos Plátanos, but another nice walk with great panoramic views of the old town can be had on the other side of the river. From the central square (Largo de Camões), walk upriver through the plane tree boulevard. Cross the river at the car bridge and walk back on its other bank....

Ponte do Lima Things to Do

Largo de Camões is Ponte de Lima's main square and as such a popular place to sit on one of the benches or to have a coffee in one of its numerous cafes. As it was quite cold when we were there, we chose the latter and enjoyed some very good pastelaria in Cafe A Tijuca, a typical down-to-earth neighbourhood cafe. Apart from having coffee, the...

    Lindoso Things to Do

Lindoso is a nice town, worth seeing among other reasons, its architectural heritage. The highlight is his castle rebuilt by D. But most of his work remains medieval .From the castle we have a beautiful view on which is the other jewel of Lindoso , which is the Praça dos...

    Lindoso Things to Do

Like the hórreo's in Galicia, espigueiros (little granaries) dot the country-side of Northern Portugal. The largest concentration of them all can be seen in Lindoso. About 60 are built behind the castle. It looks very much like a cemetery, because all the espigueiros have crosses on top. Some of them are quite old, dating from the 18th century.

This beautiful river brings me a lot of memories from my childhood. I grew up by the river and Spain.
But this river has a rich history. It's waters saw many battles between Portugal and Spain. Some spanish civil war refuggees escaped by crossing it's waters. And later the same waters were a place of contraband.
Today the river is in fact what unites the regions of Minho and Galicia
