As da Quinta: Affordable top class cuisine

Great atmosphere, top class restaurant, and reasonably priced. The menu is small, but everything is worth having. Start with an ever-changing variety of starters. Then, if you're hungry, go for the superior quality mixed grill. Otherwise, the bacalhau is especially good, the duck and pork quite special, and the traditional bean casserole with prawns is excellent. Lucia, the cook, also usually has some special dish of the day up her sleeve, so it's worth asking about that too. One of our favourite restaurants for a special occasion - but every time we go there it turns out to be special! In summer, ask for a table outside, or at least in the glazed section. Ask Luís, the owner, to recommend a wine - he has a great selection, not all on the wine list. Everyone's a special guest to him, but mention Virtual Tourist and he'll treat you royally...

Favorite Dish: Difficult to pick one favourite dish, but perhaps the starters - always different, and half a dozen or more small dishes to savour.

If you come to Viana and don’t know what kind of biscuits to buy to bring back home then my suggestion is “Biscoitos de Viana” produced by Confeitaria Natário. Confeitaria, Pastelaria, etc., these words they all mean “pastry shop”.

You don’t even have to be searching the address I am providing. Just ask somebody where Natário is and then he/she will immediately tell you. In terms of traditional local pastries, biscuits, coffees, etc., this is the right place to go, it is indeed a very popular place among locals.

Biscoitos de Viana are slightly sweet, not greasy at all, after tasting one it will leave a special feeling in your mouth and you can’t help eating a second and a third.

Confeitaria Natário: Bolas de Berlim (creamy sweet cakes)

Portugal has the best industry pastry in Europe, you will be surprisingly delighted about the whole range of cakes, doughnuts and little pastries right in front of your eyes.

The Portuguese Bolas de Berlim are inspired from the Berliner Ballens sold in German and Central Europe (in English-speaking countries are simply called doughnuts and filled mainly with jam).

Bolas de Berlim are made from sweet yeast dough fried in oil and the yellow filling cream (creme pasteleiro) inserted after a half-length cut is always visible.

Bolas de Berlim may or not be lightly sprinkled with ice sugar. In this place they aren´t.

Favorite Dish: This pastry shop sells traditional pastries and while drinking a superb coffee you may eat either a Bola de Berlim or a Pastel de Nata, or even the delicious Palmier or Bolo de Arroz, there is an indefinite range of pastries to choose from.

Bacalhau/dried cod dish

Dried cod is one of the famous staples of the Portugeuse diet - i tried it and didnt like it, something happened and i ended up with it again - and i vow ive become allergic and will never have it again!

Many people love it - i love fish - but the flavour from the drying of it is a flavour i didnt like and therefore dont see the reason why not to just have it lovely and fresh!!

Favorite Dish: we wanted to try what was local and cant get more local than the locally dried cod - Bacalhau - it was great value for money and looked great but i didnt like the taste that was there from the drying process.
the entrees of olives, pate and excellent bread were really lovely as was the Portugeuse red wine.
For 3 people it only came to about 30 euro!!

Caravela is a great pastry cafe where you can enjoy delicious cakes and pastry.
The inside decoration is beautiful.
It is located in Praça da Republica, so you can enjoy as well the great environment of the square admiring the beautiful monuments.
Don't miss!

Cozinha das Malheiras: Try "Bacalhau à Cozinha das Malheiras" (Cod-fish)

The Malheiras palace

Dont miss this restaurant. Very close of the Praça da Republica, the Malheiro Reimão family palace is the place for this restaurant. His owner, Avelino Palhares dos Santos, checks the kitchen himself. Try the "bacalhau à Cozinha das Malheiras" (Cod-fish), roasted fish, sea bean-stew,"cabrito à Serra D'Arga" (suckling goat), "Papas com rojões" (a tipical pork).Possibly the best restaurant in town.

One restaurant I remmember the name is 'O Expositor' in Braga. It has wonderful 'Papas de Sarrabulho', but it is more apropiate in winter. It'a heavy meal!

Favorite Dish: My favorite menu in these region is 'Papas de Sarrabulho' and 'Rojões' (both made with porc meat). They are delicious
