Viana do Castelo Things to Do

  • Santa Luzia

It's "impossible" to go to Viana do Castelo without a visit to Santa Luzia. I've been there only once, and... went up, of course! It's not very representative (as a matter of fact it's a copy of Sacré Coeur, from Paris), it's almost empty, but it's interesting, and the climbing provides the best views of town.

  • Praça da República

Praça da República is the main square in Viana Do Castelo. It´s a pretty square surrounded by historical buildings and two fountains and you have a few cafes with outdoor serving there so it´s the natural meeting point if you are in Viana Do Castelo.

  • The santa luzia church.

The santa luzia church is nesting above town and there is a fantastic view from up there that some would say is more interesting than the church itself, but it is a fairly interesting church build in the past century by portugese architect Miguel Ventura Terra.the road up to the church is long and winding, but you have nice facilities up there with...

  • The Castle.

Viana Do Castelo has a 17th century castle that was originally build to keep pirates at bay.Today the exterior is still quite well preserved while the interior is being partly used by the local council for more practical matters. It´s certainly worth taking a walk around it and there is no entrance fee to the place.

  • The harbour.

The harbour in Viana Do Castelo is still lively even if it is not as busy as it once was. There is still a bit of fishing going on and there are also some freighter ships coming in aswell as many private yachts.Strolling along the quayside is something i always do whenever i am in town.

  • Praça da República

We can consider this square the centre of the city. It has very beautiful buildings apart from bars and restaurants with nice terraces (at least when the sun shines).

  • Affordable top class cuisine

Great atmosphere, top class restaurant, and reasonably priced. The menu is small, but everything is worth having. Start with an ever-changing variety of starters. Then, if you're hungry, go for the superior quality mixed grill. Otherwise, the bacalhau is especially good, the duck and pork quite special, and the traditional bean casserole with...

Viana do Castelo Local Customs

  • Folklore

The north of Portugal is the most traditionalist of all Portuguese regions. Minho has also the most beautiful traditional costumes. Aware of that, the city's celebrations are a very good opportunity to see and feel it. PS - I think that almost ninety per cent of the Portuguese folk recreations abroad use the costumes and dances of this area.

  • Gold

Minho has the most colourful (and beautiful) costume of Portugal, and Viana do Castelo is proud of its tradition. The most interesting detail is that tradition invites women to use all their "richness", and their necks may hold several kilograms of gold. Of course, nowadays, each woman in traditional parade, is always protected by a relative, as...
