Favorite thing: While visiting Porto you should not miss the chance to taste Porto wine (sweet wine). Best way to do it is to cross Douro to the other side and in Vila Nova de Gaia you will find all major makes. They all allow (paid) visit to their caves and some wine tasting. I'm sure you won't regret doing this because that sweet wine is very good. If you are talking a walk along the river near Ribeira neighbourhood and look at the other side you will notice some big houses by the river with names written - those are some of the Porto wine caves.
Favorite thing:
Porto's most famous attractions are its wine and its river (the bridges that cross it, the boats that sail it...). You can experience both of them by taking a river cruise that goes all the way to the Douro Valley, where the grapes that make the wine are grown. These are truly unique vineyards (that's why UNESCO declared them a World Heritage Site), and the views are magnificent.
You can hop on a boat on either side of the river, either by the old Ribeira district, or by the wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Highly recommended.
Fondest memory:
You don't have to be a wine lover to appreciate the magnificent views of the city and the valleys in a cruise down the Douro.
A memorable experience.
Favorite thing:
Port Wine, a symbol of Portugal in the world, holds the history of a country and its people and has become through the years a cultural landmark of the work, experiences, knowledge and art gathered through generations. Encloses in itself years and years of history and tradition, and it is attached to a region - The Douro Region - whose beautiful landscapes, source of attraction since the first moment for never to be forgotten, were influenced by it.
Fondest memory:
The Port Wine cellars are the right place to discover this Portuguese wine and all of its history. Open to the public, they give you the opportunity to taste this precious nectar, to meet its evolution through the years, the region where it is produced and the way it is obtained.
