An Oasis or a Mirage? by dabidc In climbing to the top of the slope at Vila Nova de Gaia, the path led thru narrow streets and lanes, up steps and past tiny shops selling some of the basics for the people living in the houses. At the top was a park for all ages, seats for the Seniors, a playground for the younger folks and a chance to rest in the shade for the traveller. Or a place for those who had just sampled some of that Vinho de Porto. Ahh---- The small pool and palm trees was a true oasis on a hot day and far from being a mirage. Leave a Comment

Lookout Tower by dabidc The Crystal Gardens did not have a Zoo but did have an assortment of ducks, birds and cats and dogs that seemed to roam freely without any fights or attacks between animals. The lookout Tower was located on the south side of the Gardens and gave a fine view across the river and along the river to the east. The bosts on the river were mostly tourist sightseeing boats, no Ocean going ships, a few rowing skulls and near the mouth of the river some small yachts. Leave a Comment

Monte de Santa Luzia. by dabidc Way up there, yes a 30 minute climb above the town of Viano do Castelo there isthe Templo de Santa Luzia as well as Celtic ruins. The Templo is of 20th Century vintage and there used to be a cable car which operated in 2000, but is no longer able to assist the traveller up the hill. The views from the top are extensive over both the town and the river and it is possible to see the Ocean beyond the harbour. This visit to Viano is a stop over on the journey to NW Spain. It is located about mid way between Porto and the Portuguese/Spanish border, north of Porto I placed the info on the visit to Viano do Castelo in OTBP for Porto , there is no listing for Viano do Castelo in VT. Narrow lane in Viano. by dabidc Viano do Castelo is a small town of 20,000 people and many of the streets are narrow and were excellent when the town was smaller and probably within town walls. The main street is now modernised and has car parking facilities under the main street. The older parts of the town include the Praca de Republica , with a 16th Century fountain. A Town Hall is also in this vicinity and the church of Igreja da Misericordia. The narrow lanes cross from east to west and connect with theruins of a fort to the west. Leave a Comment

Crystal Gardens by dabidc After a day walking in and around Porto and Vila Nove de Gaia, as well as a day on St Catherine's street shopping, I needed to find a place of greenery and peace and quiet to walk around, take photos and watch the local people enjoy a fine day. I found Crystal Gardnes by walking west for about 15 blocks and entering the Gardens. The photo shows a well treed location with lawns and flowers and a building that looked like an Exhibition Hall. One could wander all around the gradens and the building and eventually find a view over the Douro river. Leave a Comment

View of Viano do Castelo by dabidc The view shows the wide river at Viano and the bridge is the rail link from Porto. The more modern area is near the rail and road bridge to the east of town. Older buildings in the centre and the port/harbour and ruins of the fort are to the west end of town. Leave a Comment

Riverfront shaded walk by dabidc What more can a visitor want in a small town, there is the Cathedral on the hill, the river Lima, with boats and yachts, the old and historic parts of the town, the harbour, well there is more, just a little further west is the Atlantic Ocean and an old fort. So come along and explore. Leave a Comment

West along the Douro. by dabidc At one place it was possible to look west and see not only the newer bridge but also the Ocean as the river found its way west. Crystal Gardens is not a place that is normally Off The Beaten Path, but it seemed so deserted on this a fine sunny Sunday morning in late September. Leave a Comment

Side view of the figure. by dabidc The little guide book did not say anything about this figure, any answers you Vters out there? Located very close to the old fort near the harbour at Viana Do Castelo. Believe me I had to risk life and limb to take these two photos, well not really. The wall to the right was the parapet of the fort. Leave a Comment

Farewell to Viano by dabidc Well the last shot sums up the fact that no tourist or traveller can stop the regular traditions or the local people, if it is the day to wash the clothes, you have to live with it. The view taken from the old gate at the fort, looking up to the Cathedral on the Hill. A fitting end to the visit to this Off The Beaten Path, town of 20,000 people. It was a pleasure to visit and a pleasan interlude and a vastly calmer place to visit than Porto. Leave a Comment
