The airport in Porto is actually located in a nearby town called Maia, which is about 11 km away from the centre of Porto. If you don't anyone to pick you up or any rented car, don't worry, just take a taxi or an 'Aerobus'(reservation needed for this). TAXI: On a Saturday, from the airport to Holiday Inn Garden Court, I spent about 15,84 Euros + 1,50 Euros (luggage) and this taxi driver showed me the most important monuments in Porto. On Sunday, from my hotel to the airport, I spent about 18 Euros (rate + luggage included). AEROBUS (arrival reservation): http://www.stcp.pt/pt/mapas/aerobus.htm (site in Portuguese). The departure reservation must be made at your hotel (if your hotel have an agreement with the bus company).
Definitely by foot, so don't forget your most comfortable pair of shoes.

The picture above was the very last one that I took, from the south bank of the river Douro facing back across central Porto. It sums up pretty much everything that was striking for me about Porto.......
