 | Porto Sports Travel | Tips 1 - 10 of 16 | | The new Dragon's Stadium will host the opening ceremony of the Euro 2004, as well as the competition's first match, and it will almost certainly host one of the tournament's semi-finals. Opening ceremony Located in the urban zone adjacent to the existing stadium, the project forms part of the planned Sports City complex. This will be the privileged stage for the UEFA EURO 2004 opening ceremony and match. Dragão Stadium - Oporto The famous Antas Stadium, one of the most distinctive features of the city of Porto, has changed its name and its appearance with the building of the Dragão Stadium, the name chosen for the baptism of the new ground to be used by Futebol Clube do Porto (FCP), itself an important symbol of Portugal’s second largest city. The new stadium has taken on added importance since it is the anchor structure in the urban renewal project for the Antas district of Porto. All around this ground is to be built the so-called “ Sports City”, a project that includes a series of sports facilities, recreational areas, and residential and shopping areas, etc. The concept of this Stadium is also profoundly innovative, creating a new central focus in what is a problematic area for the city in terms of mobility, through newly built accesses. Its monumental capacity for 50 thousand spectators means that the Dragão Stadium has already been classified as a Grade A stadium by UEFA, making it suitable for any international football event, just like the old Antas Stadium, which was already one of the most modern grounds in Europe. All this has to be added to its most impressive architecture. FCP, founded in 1903, has a vast list of victories in its curriculum , its different blue and white teams having successfully turned it into one of the most important football clubs in the country..

The stadium of the “checked shirts” ..... but there’s no puzzle!! Did you know that Boavista Futebol Clube was the only club that never stopped playing at its own ground, even when the new Bessa XXI Stadium was being built? Well, it’s true! In fact, in keeping with its traditions, Boavista is the only Portuguese Club whose ground has always been the same since the foundation of the team, known as the “checked shirts”. The new stadium has been built entirely from scratch, literally “on top” of the former Bessa stadium (originating from 1972) and it is located in an important, busy area of Porto, Boavista, a residential district with several schools. In this “chic” area, “The Boavista Footballers ” first came into being at the start of the 20th Century, originating from the great passion for football shared between the Portuguese and the local English residents. In fact, this ancestral link between Boavista and the English has had an influence on the design of the present-day building, where preference has been given to the height of the structure, resulting in a ground whose architecture is reminiscent of that of the old English stadiums. And, either with or without English inspiration, evidence of innovation is to be found everywhere, both inside and outside the ground. The Bessa XXI Stadium is part of a much vaster sports complex that includes a gymnasium and sports pavilion (currently under construction), tennis courts, training pitches, etc.. Four new stands have been built, one of which – the northern stand – houses four gymnasiums. All of them are covered The Bessa XXI Stadium is one of two “monuments” – amongst many others – that give the city its distinctive appearance, standing proudly alongside the famous Antas Stadium , the “home” of Futebol Clube do Porto. Capacity: 30.000 covered seats GAMES: Denmark - Sweden - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto - 2nd June - 7.45 pm Greece - Spain - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto –16th June – 5 pm Latvia - Germany - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto - 19th June – 5 pm
ACCESS: The Bessa XXI Stadium is situated in an urban area in the city of Porto. Access to the southern entrance is from Avenida da Boavista, the city’s main distributional axis.If you are approaching via the A1 Motorway from Lisbon to Porto (310 Km - approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes by car), there is an immediate connection to VCI, the Porto inner ring road that links up with all the main local and national road networks. The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is 17 Km from the Stadium Access by local buses. GAMES: Greece - Spain - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto –16th June – 5 pm Latvia - Germany - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto - 19th June – 5 pm Denmark - Sweden - Bessa XXI Stadium – Oporto - 22nd June - 7.45 pm Leave a Comment Theme: Sports WatchingAddress: Av. da boavistaPhone: 22 607 10 20Website: www.boavistafc.pt

The Estadio do Bessa was under construction when we were there, they are preparing it for the European Soccer Championships in 2004, which will take place in ... yes, you guessed right! : Portugal. Both stands behind the goals were completely gone, but the high main stands at both sides provided for a nice soccer atmosphere. Somewhat disappointingly, only about 6,000 spectators showed up for this UEFA Cup match, among them about 300 Hertha fans from Berlin. Leave a Comment Theme: Sports Watching

The stands in the Estadio do Bessa are quite steep. We were located in the upper part of the main stand. If people stand up during the match (and our fans are standing for most of the time, usually ...), one can hardly see the action at the near sideline. But generally, the view is great and the roof provides for a loud atmosphere. Leave a Comment Theme: Sports Watching

the porto air race is also called the redbull air race as redbull sponsors the event. it´s held once a year in early september and is quite a spectacular event with planes flying under the bridges of porto and around town in general. this is something for people who like the sound of engines as the show is extremely noisy. There's many docks along the Rio Douro, and there are ramps where you can launch your boat from in Ribeira. If you own a boat, come here for a pleasant day of cruising down this lovely river.

Porto have two top division sides in the Portuguese league- FC Porto and Boavista. If you are intending to attend a match when in Porto be aware that the teams do not play at home alternate weeks as Arsenal and Spurs do in the English premier league for example. You may be unlucky and get both teams away from home as I did! Theme: Sports Watching

The Estadio do Dragao is the new stadium of F C Porto; the inaugural game was in 2003-nov-16. It is really very beautiful and useful, indeed. Now, at this city, is very comfortable to watch football games, not in TV but just in the stadium... Leave a Comment Theme: Sports Watching
