sippin' away by arasnosliw We went to three different port wine caves. Yep, call us drunk if you want, because we certainly were after all the free samples. Port wine, for those of you who are not familiar, is much stronger than your conventional wine. A few sips of port will leave you feeling woozy. Aside from being unable to understand my tour given in Italian, I highly recommend Graham's. It is further away than all the other caves, but they provide free tours and samples. There is a free shuttle from the waterfront in Gaia, but we walked here. It didn't take more than 20 minutes. I would recommend the shuttle however because the street leading to Graham's is very steep and winds treacherously. Every time a car passes, I was afraid that it would hit be because you can't see beyond the curves. You'll be given samples of tawny, white, and red varieties of port wine. I prefer the less popular white because it is a dry wine, unlike the super-sweet reds and tawnies. barrels of port wine aging in the caves by arasnosliw, 1 more photos Across the Douro river, Vila Nova de Gaia is home to the region's port wine caves. There are more than a number of caves, each a bit different than the others. Some may charge admission, where others do not. A visit to a cave generally consists of a few samples, a tour of the caves with a little history lesson, and more wine and snacks to consume until you are feeling woozy. Often times, tour guides are trained in multiple languages, catering to your native tongue. I encountered a little dilemma when touring the caves...I was traveling with an Italian friend who spoke Portuguese but hardly any English. I spoke Portuguese but not any Italian. When we arrived in the cave, the entire group of visitors embarking on the tour were Italians (who clearly didn't speak Portuguese). Needless to say, I was outnumbered and had to undergo the tour in Italian. Fun for me!! Once in the port wine cellars, embark on a tour (preferably in a language you can understand), There's usually an overview on port wine making, a history of production in the Douro Valley, and more stuff to excite or bore you. The caves are cold, since they are kept at a cool temperature beneficial to fermentation. If you are easily chilled like me, bring some warm clothing! Leave a Comment Directions: Vila Nova de Gaia

View of roof of the Cathedral by dabidc The Cathedral is off to the south east of the main square, along past the railway station and along Ave Vimara Peres and is about level with the city centre. Since I tend to walk around a new location I plan to do the same in Porto, letting the mood and the streets take me to points of interest. In doing this the photos are of the places visited as I walk. The Cathedral stands on raised ground overlooking the river. There is a large plaza to the west and the wall at the edge gives excellent views across the Douro to south bank. The Cathedral itself was not as fine as many in other parts of Europe, however there was a booklet in English explaining the history. For a small fee I roamed around and found my way past the main altar, some statues and up to the roof. Leave a Comment Address: S.E of the main square overlooking the riverDirections: The Cathedral or Se is located south of the Sao Bento rail station and on the west side of Av Vimara Peres.

Noted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as of 1996, Ribeira , or the historic center of Porto is eye candy. The neighborhood is situated on the banks of the Douro River. The old buildings here are vividly painted and beautifully decorated. Often times you'll view old ladies people watching off of their balconies or hanging wet clothes on the line to dry. There are numerous cafes and outdoor eating venues in which you can relax alongside of the river. Although this old neighborhood has authenticity in style and architecture, unfortunately most of the restaurants cater to tourists and are overpriced. It is great, though, to sit in the praça and enjoy a cafe. When wandering along the streets of Ribeira, make sure and look UP. The colorful houses are styled in the sense that each flat has a mini balcony (veranda) that is pretty useless. The verandas are merely big enough to fit 2 or 3 people standing, so they are often just used to line-dry clothes, hang plants, display the Portuguese flag, or store miscellaneous objects. In this case, many have bright umbrellas to shade from the sun. Locals (especially the elders) like to mingle on the verandas and yell across to others on the streets or next door. It's rather entertaining to watch. Leave a Comment Directions: waterfront

Torre dos Clerigos, Porto by antistar I always like to start my visit to a city by getting an overview of the place from some vantage point, and there is nothing better for this in central Porto than the Torre do Clerigos. This tower is over 75 meters tall, and was the highest building in Portugal when it was built in 1763. It's height coupled with its location high on the hillside above the river makes for sensational views of the city, especially the red roofed building tumbling down past the Cathedral to the river Douro. The fantastic Baroque architecture, and the way it looms over the city skyline from everywhere you look, make this an unmissible landmark for the city. The best place to see it, in my opinion, is from the Cathedral grounds at sunset. Here you can see the sun falling behind the tower into a peach coloured haze on the horizon. Unforgettable. If only I'd had my camera. It costs just one euro to climb up the steps to the top of the tower, paying a grumpy clerk at the door. You access it from the same place as the attached Igreja dos Clerigos (Church), taking a right for the tower and a left for the church. Leave a Comment Directions: From Prace da Liberdade, walk up Rua dos Clerigos. The church stands right at the end of the street. Walk around it to the right, and you will see the entrace to the tower and church halfway along on your left.

Visiting this bookshop is to experience a trip into the past. The outside has a beautiful neo-gothic facade but as if that is not enough when you step inside you can see one of the most magnificent staircases ever. It is still a working bookshop. The staff are more than willing to help you with questions on the history of the place. Leave a Comment Address: 144, Carmelitas StreetPhone: 222 002 037

Ponte Luis I (under construction) by arasnosliw The Bridge Luis I, built in 1886, is one of the most photographed landmarks in Porto. When I visited, the bridge was under construction because an underground train system was in the process of being built. Thus I apologize for all the framework masking the true beauty of the bridge in my photo. The bridge connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia (on the south side of the Douro). Leave a Comment

pardon my maluco amigo italiano in the photo by arasnosliw The system of eléctricos (trams) in Porto can take you all around the city. Although Porto is a rather condensed town, it may be a good idea to ride these old-fashioned trams if you have an aversion towards hills. The trams started running in the late 1870s, and while many lines were shut down, several have been reopened in current times. The tram pictured here is line #1, which runs along the waterfront of the Douro. Leave a Comment

Porto's sister city, Vila Nova de Gaia by arasnosliw Across the river from Porto, this sister city is often unrecognized although it is home to the famous port wine caves. Most people think that this is just part of Porto. From Vila Nova de Gaia, there are spectacular views of Porto. Make the trip here to sample port wine and taste delicious food. Leave a Comment Directions: south of the Douro from Porto. Walk across the Dom Luis I bridge.

Igreja de São Francisco by arasnosliw There's more churches in Porto than you can count. In fact, this entire country of Portugal is swarming with churches. I just came from Coimbra before visiting Porto, and I was ultimately churched out by now. So my friend and I made it a point to NOT enter any churches in Porto, no matter how beautiful or extravangant they were. C'mon, aren't they all deemed beautiful and extravagant ?! So, I only snapped a few photos of churches in Porto and called it a done deal. This is the church of St. Francisco. This is a gothic styled church, although baroque styled inside. Admission is 3 Euros. Leave a Comment Address: Rua do Infante D. HenriqueDirections: on the way to Ribeira, near the tram line #1
